<text>This paper reports on the results of archaeological surveys carried out in the Quebrada de los Cardones, located in the eastern sector of the Yocavil Valley, in the province of Tucumán. Sites belonging to the Regional Developments period were surveyed.
An architectural and planialtimetric survey was conducted of all the structures at a residential-use site called Los Cardones, which is located on the slopes and summit of a hill on the left bank of the Amaicha River. The extensive piedmont cones and the nearby lower sectors on the right bank of the Amaicha River were also surveyed, and structures, mainly agricultural in nature, occupying different parts of the landscape were documented.
The abundant information gathered makes it possible to infer the articulation and organization of space in the Quebrada de los Cardones, allowing hypotheses to be developed regarding the differential use of the various areas within the zone under study. The proposed model classifies the types of structures, their possible functions, the characteristics of the landscape in which they are located, and their relationship with resources.</text>

<text>This paper presents tools for analyzing the social phenomenon that occurs when people from different geographical, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds come together. Taking this as the central axis of our work, we pose the following question: what analytical tools do two disciplines within the social sciences, ethnography and sociolinguistics, provide for understanding this phenomenon in educational settings?
Through this question, we develop a critical perspective on what we often, perhaps naively, call diversity and multiculturalism when the webs of power commonly established in micro-interactions among different people are not taken into account.
We present our ideas through the analysis of data collected between 1996 and 1998 in different geographical spaces: the United States of America, specifically the state of California, and the Argentine Republic, specifically the Federal Capital, as well as in two different educational settings: an Argentine school and work with families in a community in the state of California.
We conclude by taking a position on how to understand multicultural situations and by proposing that it is possible to translate this reality into conceptual maps and lines of action useful to those for whom diversity is an everyday fact of professional practice, such as teachers, health educators, health workers, and community workers.</text>

The main objective of our research focuses on the links established between the school and the culture of the region through the curriculum. To this end, in addition to the data obtained through our own inquiry, we draw on the contributions of the projects mentioned above. The first provides information on the social discourses that circulate within the community and express the current culture of the place, while the second offers information related to the reconstruction of the cultural history of the region as a consequence of the processes of adaptation and change that developed there, allowing for an adequate semiotic reading of the present.</text>

<text>On numerous occasions, researchers working in the Social Sciences are compelled to justify their scientific activity. Where do these needs originate? Why does this demand to demonstrate the validity of scientific knowledge arise?
This paper refers to the traditional opposition between the Natural Sciences and the Social Sciences, which has become an epistemological obstacle. It analyzes the object of study, the methodology, and the way in which each field appropriates knowledge. It also refers to the current socio-historical conditions that devalue human interaction.
The approach centers on considering intersubjectivity as a proposal for overcoming the subject–object split and postulates participatory methodology as a way of knowing and documenting different and diverse social realities in which the researcher becomes involved in the lives of others.
It proposes the “Workshop with Families” within the school setting as a participatory strategy: a means of access to the representations that families construct regarding their children’s schooling. At the same time, it recovers interaction among parents, between parents and the research team, and among the members of the interdisciplinary team themselves. In turn, it makes it possible to establish a democratic space in school life.</text>

<text>This paper seeks to present some personal conclusions on the concept of health, focused on the plane of subjectivity, that is, on what is today called mental health. These reflections are articulated with a concrete analysis of the identity contradictions expressed by teachers in Jujuy in relation to the process of Educational Transformation.
Our notions of psychism and mental health are based on the idea that the human being is a bio-socio-psychological unity and, moreover, that the ideas held about the body and even about its own functioning are conditioned by social organization. Thus, rather than speaking of a “relationship” between health and the social sciences, we understand health as a social, and therefore historical, notion. Once the narrowness of an organicist perspective has been overcome, health falls fully within the field of the social sciences.
The analysis of teachers’ identity conflicts forms part of a research project that has been developed since 1998 by the Social Psychology teaching team at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, entitled “Models of Teacher Identity in the Educational Transformation: Jujuy Teachers and Their Social Context”. The preparation of this report has served as a stimulus to approach the topic from the angle of mental health, on the basis of the notion of psychic conflict.</text>

<text>In this paper, we aim to present the research project developed by the Educational Psychology teaching team of the Educational Sciences program at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, National University of Jujuy. Our research, centered on symbolic production, seeks to study how children construct reality through written narrative discourse.
To this end, we formulated the following objectives: to understand how schoolchildren organize written narrative discourse and how marks of subjectivity are expressed in it; and to discover how schoolchildren view or focus on the world and reality through their written narratives.
We therefore considered it necessary to investigate how they organize their written discourses and how the marks of the subject of enunciation are inscribed in them. Symbolic production is understood as the set of representations through which a subject accounts for his or her particular interpretation of reality.
Among the symbolization functions of subjects, we focus on language as one of the most significant, since culture is sustained by symbolic procedures, concepts, and distinctions that can be realized through language. Although children enter school as users of a language and have already interacted with it, this knowledge allows them to communicate orally with a certain degree of effectiveness, but it is not sufficient for written communication.
When constructing a written narrative, children face problems both at the level of expression and at the level of content. For this reason, we analyze both the level of formal organization and that of content, which constitutes the central purpose of this research.</text>

<text>In the official documents of the Educational Transformation, group space appears as a privileged field of action and transformation of the teaching role. On this basis, we considered it essential to contrast the official proposal with teachers’ actual practice in schools.
Objectives: 1. To detect the degree of coherence between the discourse of the Educational Transformation and the actual group practices promoted by it. 2. To investigate whether the group constitutes a space of alienation or encounter within the framework of the transformation, and which phenomena determine the integration or fragmentation of its members.
Results: The group sphere is understood as a space of containment and support for affective bonds, while groups centered on the pedagogical task appear to a lesser extent. There is great difficulty in focusing on a task in heterogeneous groups, while bonds are strengthened among those who share the same space and time. Economic difficulties, lack of time due to the bureaucratic requirements of the system, and distrust of others obstruct the construction of a group project.
Conclusion: In today’s school, there is a great diversity of groups that confront one another according to their positions regarding the problems posed by the Educational Reform. Classroom isolation, competition, and intergroup isolation have deepened. The “group” activities imposed by the Educational Transformation accentuate the obstacles to sharing teachers’ needs.</text>

<text>This paper presents the results of systematic surveys carried out in the De las Tunas River basin in the Uco Valley, province of Mendoza. Our objective is to study the area from a regional archaeological perspective, integrating site-based investigations with the contributions of distributional, off-site archaeology, in order to identify transformations and continuities in the prehistoric occupation of the regional landscape.
We adopted the methodology proposed for distributional studies, which consisted of surveying the selected microregion through transects for the intensive and systematic pedestrian inspection of the different sectors of the landscape. It also included the recording—position, measurement, systematic collections, sampling, and mapping—of environmental conditions, “isolated finds”, and concentrations of artifacts.
Despite the limitations regarding chronological precision and the functionality of the sites, we identified patterns of settlement and landscape use in the different stages of regional prehistory. These patterns could indicate population growth and mobility, as well as technological and cultural change.</text>

<text>In this article, I discuss certain perspectives that reduce the debate surrounding the Educational Transformation Project to an evaluation centered on its formulation and implementation. I argue that it is necessary to produce interpretations that make it possible to understand the substantial changes experienced by the subjects involved in educational practices and to identify the practical effects of educational policies.
In order to develop this understanding, I focus on the specific case of primary schools in the province of Río Negro, centering the analysis on changes in teachers’ school practices. Through the description of certain situations experienced by teachers during the 1990s, and particularly after the long teachers’ strike of 1995, I show some of these changes.
Basically, these changes consist of a substantial transformation of teachers’ work imposed by the provincial state, which affects features of teachers’ identity, redefines social relations, and causes harm in their everyday lives; a disruption of everyday school life encouraged by the actions and discourses of government authorities; and the emergence of new forms of reconstituting shared spaces for encounter, protest, and public denunciation among female and male teachers, mothers, and fathers.</text>

<text>In this paper new data about Agua Hedionda Inca settlement are presented. As a result of the whole site planimetric mapping the buildings spatial arrangement and constructive techniques are stated. Agua Hedionda shows a planning and architectural pattern which reflect the particularities adopted in provincial centers placed in the southern portion of the Kollasuyu. Inca architectural elements just as kanchas surrounding a plaza with ushnu, kallanka and concentrated storage units were built on the arroyo Seco terrace (AH1), in front of them other structures were placed along a top hill (AAH1). Thus far, the evidences obtained enable us to assume that in the middle of the XVItth century Agua Hedionda and its related sites were settled in an strategic point of the agriculturally productive southern valleys of Jujuy, revealing the visibility of the administrative Inca rule in an “empty” zone.</text>

<text>This paper analyzes the turbulent politics of the province of Salta between 1825 and 1831, a period marked by the conflict between those who supported a centralized political order and those who defended federalism. The former maintained that the only way to achieve the political organization of the republic was through the acceptance of a central power recognized by the provinces. One governor of Salta described federalism as a political hurricane that would destroy order and lead to anarchy.
“Citizen-merchants” belonging to the provincial elites sustained these wars through loans to the state, providing an example of the active participation of civil society in the political-military process. The contributors protected the goods they had lent by invoking the rights granted to them by law, the juridical basis of the republic, which was in some circumstances disregarded by the state itself, both provincial and national.
Finally, we argue that, during the years under study, the province of Salta, having become a political frontier with another emerging state, maintained governments loyal to a centralized power, among other reasons, in order to defend against a possible external attack a territory they considered their own, wished to organize juridically, and called a nation.</text>

In the small community of Jujuy, events took place that reveal the combination of old and new conceptions of “nation” and “sovereignty” during the period in which the men of the Río de la Plata sought to replace Spanish authority.
The attempts to construct a new political order were legitimized through rituals and symbols that served to justify the new government. These were necessary in distant and small cities which, like Jujuy, became a frontier of the former Spanish possession.</text>

This paper analyzes the activities of local commercial houses and the structuring of networks prior to emigration, as well as the operation of these networks from Valparaíso, Cobija, and Potosí between 1831 and 1852. <text>This paper examines the merchants of Salta, a sector that grew in importance during the nineteenth century. It shows how prominent members of the mercantile sector were interrelated with important figures in local politics, and the influence they exerted on provincial affairs during the first half of the nineteenth century.
This includes their participation in the Mercantile Court and in other public offices, as well as the changes experienced by the mercantile sector during the period of the Civil Wars as a result of the political fluctuations that affected it.
The main objective of the paper is to show how the mercantile and political sectors were connected throughout this period. To this end, the records of the Mercantile Court, official correspondence from the Government Copybooks, and other additional sources were consulted.</text>
