<text>This paper analyzes the forms of organization of urban retail businesses in the markets of the cities of Salta and San Salvador de Jujuy during the nineteenth century. To this end, it identifies the different types of establishments open to the public, some of the strategies they carried out in their businesses, their links and/or conflicts with large merchants, as well as the changes they underwent during a period marked by political and military turmoil.
In addition, the growing number of shops, pulperías, and other establishments bears witness to the economic dynamism that these cities managed to maintain despite the conflicts of the early nineteenth century. These establishments also serve as indicators of the intensity and potential of urban sociability, a variable that is also taken into account in this study.</text>

Its main source of information is the cadastral survey carried out by the provincial government in 1855 for the purpose of collecting the territorial tax. <text>In this paper, we begin by considering co-residence as the central axis for approaching the study of the household unit and its activities. Space and residential constructions thus become the material referent of this social concept. The artifact assemblages recovered and their spatial distribution allow us to establish initial hypotheses regarding the organization of the activities carried out there by the minimal residential group that cohabited the unit.
In order to evaluate this model, we began by analyzing certain surface evidence from the pre-Hispanic settlement of Los Amarillos, Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy, identifying an apparently recurrent architectural pattern. We selected a unit that could correspond to the simplest conception of a domestic residential compound and began its excavation.
As a result of the initial work, we recovered a highly varied assemblage of de facto refuse. The diversity of the recorded materials seems to indicate the development of a wide range of activities, including lithic knapping and reactivation, food preparation, textile production, and metallurgical practices. The arrangement of the finds shows a high degree of spatial segregation and ordering, and makes it possible to formulate initial inferences and hypotheses.</text>

To carry out the test, sterile sediment samples from different levels of an anthropic mound were selected. Three types of seeds were added, chosen on the basis of their size: poppy, Papaver somniferum; broccoli, Brassica oleracea; and bean, Phaseolus vulgaris.
The recovery rates obtained were 100% for bean, 94.4% for broccoli, and 76.2% for poppy. Finally, the results obtained are assessed, as well as the possibility of applying them to the recovery of archaeological specimens.</text>

These replicas were knapped following the lanceolate design of archaeological projectile points recovered from the Inca Cueva 7 site, ca. 4000 years BP, located at 3860 m a.s.l. in the Puna of Jujuy, Argentina.
The objectives were aimed at determining the interrelations between the techno-morphological design of the replicas and their resistance to impact, as well as evaluating the mechanical behavior of the components of the launching technical system: hook-propeller, or atlatl, and projectile, with a composite shaft.
The experimental plan was carried out in three stages: production of replicas, N = 10; assembly of the projectiles; and use/launching of the projectiles toward a bone impact target. After the launches, the final condition of the projectiles was evaluated in relation to the archaeological specimens.</text>

<text>This paper addresses general aspects of the lithic technology and typology of the Campo Blanco site, located in the Quebrada de Amaicha, province of Tucumán. Campo Blanco is an open-air site where lithic procurement and workshop activities were carried out, resulting in a high density of lithic artifacts on the surface.
The technological study focused on identifying the different stages of the technical-operational chain, with the aim of providing information on an aspect that is still little known for sites of this kind within the valley-and-mountain area of Northwestern Argentina.
The materials, obtained through systematic surface collections and shovel tests, were analyzed according to the technological and typological criteria proposed by Aschero (1975, 1983).
Evidence was recorded of procurement, manufacture, including extraction and shaping, possible use, and recycling activities. These stages and processes are considered to correspond to recurrent occupations, which resulted in a palimpsest produced by their superposition.</text>

<text>This paper analyzes the results obtained from soil samples taken at a Formative site in the archaeological subarea of the San Francisco River valley, located in the region of the Argentine Western Forests. These studies include different types of chemical analyses, whose values are compared with other indicators, such as the density and spatial distribution of archaeological remains and structures, artifact size, and the presence of wild vegetation.
It is proposed that the comparative analysis of all these indicators provides new tools for the interpretation of intrasite activity areas in regions where archaeological evidence is generally reduced to the surface dispersion of remains as a result of modern anthropogenic disturbance.</text>

It is considered that greater knowledge of the characteristics and composition of lithic artifact assemblages, as well as their temporal and spatial variation, is fundamental for understanding sociocultural dynamics and their transformations.
The paper describes the tasks carried out in relation to the analysis of the lithic materials from this site. It also offers a preliminary characterization of some artifacts and of the lithic assemblage as a whole and presents for discussion several relevant points concerning the lithic production system identified so far.</text>

<text>The purpose of this paper is to study design in the manufacture of projectile points from the Quebrada del Toro, province of Salta, Argentina, specifically those from Santa Rosa de Tastil.
With the aim of “minimizing” subjectivity in the search for indicators of identity traits, ordination methods, including descriptive and multivariate statistics, particularly principal component analysis, were used to analyze which combination of variables has the greatest influence on artifact variation and regularity.
The points show a regular design that distinguishes them from those of other periods, such as the Formative. They are characterized by the choice of raw material, metagraywacke and obsidian; the geometric shape of the blade, triangular; the form and direction of flake scars, parallel; and the concave outline of the base of the blade.
Accepting that the lithic assemblage of projectile points can be studied in its stylistic dimension, this paper proposes to broaden the discussion on the archaeological identification of identity traits. It is also necessary to include studies of lithic technology in research on the Regional Developments and Inka periods.</text>

<text>The archaeological findings from the systematic excavation of two cemeteries in the valleys and ravines region, both showing evidence of Hispanic-Indigenous contact, are analyzed and discussed from a bioarchaeological perspective and from the perspective of the social dimensions of mortuary behavior, or archaeology of death.
The variety of findings corresponding to each cemetery is presented and described: SJ Til 43, or “La Falda Cemetery”, in Tilcara, Quebrada de Humahuaca, Jujuy; and SJ Cat RCh 21, or “Rincón Chico 21 Cemetery”, in the Santa María de Yokavil Valley. The results are analyzed, discussed, and interpreted in relation to their value as both direct and indirect indicators of territorial, chronological, and sociocultural significance.
The analysis concludes with a consideration of the possible components and meanings within the context of Andean traditions that emphasize long-distance exchange relations, as well as the symbolic, religious, mythological, and cosmological aspects very probably involved in the choice of funerary inclusions.</text>

<text>This paper reviews the archaeological, ethnohistorical, and colonial information concerning the peoples who inhabited what is known in the archaeological literature as the Puna of Jujuy. It presents the evidence corresponding to the pre-Hispanic societies that occupied this area, with special reference to settlement patterns, movable goods, funerary practices, and rock art. Within this context, the organization and location of archaeological settlements are discussed, as well as their most significant construction techniques.
The paper also reviews the information provided by different researchers who have addressed the ethnic affiliation of the ancient inhabitants of the Jujuy Puna, together with the limited ethnohistorical information available. The different positions are discussed and contrasted with archaeological data, which are in turn compared with the existing colonial documentation for the same area.
The information obtained makes it possible to propose, as a hypothesis, a more precise territorial attribution for the different ethnic groups of the Puna of Jujuy before the arrival of the Europeans. This use and control of the territory was later subject to severe changes as a consequence of colonial administration, although an important part of it continued to be occupied by its former pre-Hispanic inhabitants.</text>

<text>In this paper, we present an interpretation of the results obtained so far concerning the relationship between local societies and the Inka state in the Lerma Region, province of Salta, Argentina. We seek alternative explanatory approaches by incorporating the concepts of resistance and domination, as well as the search for equilibrium through negotiation.
We consider that the articulation between the state and local societies was related to a highly complex process of oppositional relations, accompanied by a restructuring of the social, economic, and political organization of the different ethnic groups. One of the objectives of the state, within the context of this bilateral relationship, was to obtain rotating labor prestations from the local population, depending on the degree of resistance encountered. Another objective must have been the implementation of strategies aimed at overcoming this resistance and achieving control over the situation.
The analysis of the archaeological context in the northern and southern sectors of the Lerma Region suggests that the state system may have implemented strategies intended to control rotating labor prestations and possibly to disrupt networks for the exchange of goods. These processes were related to the characteristics of social, political, and economic organization and to the different degrees of resistance presented by local groups.</text>

<text>In the mountain ranges located east of the Quebrada del Toro, Rosario de Lerma Department, Salta, there is an important segment of an Inka road that was mentioned by Eric Boman in the early twentieth century. Along the approximately 70 km covered by the Morohuasi-Incahuasi segment, we have discovered what we consider to be a complete sequence of sites associated with the road, which shows practically uninterrupted continuity and little deterioration of anthropogenic origin.
During the survey, we recorded a total of twenty-five new archaeological sites, as well as structures directly and indirectly related to the road, for which no information was found in the bibliography consulted. On this basis, we propose two morphological classes of sites. Their distribution suggests a sector that was highly controlled by the Inka state.
These sites are located on the Inka road, alongside it, or on adjacent hills. The number of observation, control, and possible toll posts located along almost 70 km of the road studied suggests a strongly controlled sector.
Given the productive importance of the region and its direct connection with archaeological sites from the Late and Inka periods, possibly associated with high population density or administrative importance, this research opens a new perspective for the resignification and integration of data and research at a regional scale.</text>

<text>Cucho de Ocloyas is located in the Eastern Valleys of Jujuy, controlling a possible entrance route from the Chaco plains through the Catres River. It displays features typical of an Inka frontier garrison which, according to our hypothesis, would have been intended to protect the Tiraxi-Tesorero production area and the Pukara of Volcán itself, as well as to provide information on movements along the frontier.
The pottery assemblages recovered, including diagnostic ceramics such as an aríbalo fragment and duck-shaped plates, would indicate that the settlement is contemporaneous with the period of state domination in the region. However, other structural and ceramic features suggest that the settlement is not purely Inka, indicating that other cultural, social, or economic processes took place at the site. These processes shaped the particular character of the archaeological record and may be explained through alternative hypotheses.
This paper discusses the following possibilities: first, that such particularities were generated by intense processes of interaction on the frontier with groups from the Chaco; second, that they resulted from local developments, arising from the persistence of ancient regional traditions; and third, that they originated in the presence of mitimaes relocated by the Inka state from other places to serve as specialists in the defense of the southeastern frontier.</text>
