<text>The defense and administration of cultural and environmental heritage is an issue that cannot be addressed except in relation to current concepts and trends in science and policy. This is shown by the analysis of documents issued by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Conferences on Cultural Policies. From these documents, we can extract a number of ideas that, first outlined in Venice in 1970, were gradually completed in subsequent meetings—Helsinki, 1972; Yogyakarta, 1973; Accra, 1975; Bogotá, 1978; and Mexico, 1982—through the incorporation of new contributions. These contributions were the result of a deeper treatment of the issues, made unavoidable by the geopolitical changes taking place in various regions of the world.
These new ideas gradually shaped a new “global political concept”, which was not assumed in the same way by the different countries and regions that make up the international community and even less so by the promoters of change.
Our starting point is a reflection on the factors that have led, in the last decade, to a renewed treatment of issues related to the importance of developing cultural policies and defending cultural heritage.
On the basis of ideas from several Latin American authors and recent official documents that we consider important, we analyze and attempt to ground our own practice in relation to the promotion of cultural values, seeking to answer the questions of how and for what purpose—or for whom—we construct our proposals.</text>

<text>The treatment given by the Argentine press to the issue of the disappeared during the military dictatorship of 1976–1983 is highly complex. The emergence of the disappeared as an issue on the social agenda, together with its conditions of truth, brought into confrontation the fictional construction of society produced by the military narrative and the newspapers’ modes of exposition. Could the disappeared be named? Under what form of discursive identity could they appear?
This situation also involved the ordinary reader, the citizen, who had a direct and non-mediated experience of the events. This struggle over the definition and content of a word, and over the identity of an unprecedented social actor in national history, violently put into crisis the forms of enunciation and the modeling of informational discourse.
In short, the case of the disappeared is configured as a true “discursive device” because it is closely linked to military power, to the power of the media as operators of visibility, and to the power of the relatives to reject, deny, and finally transform the prevailing regime of enunciation.</text>

Here I present the elements needed to navigate the Diccionario de uso para el análisis lítico, developed from a corpus of Latin American archaeological texts and available at www.winchkler.com.ar. I list the criteria followed in each stage of the work: delimitation of the corpus, segmentation of the texts, organization of the segmented fragments into different definitions, selection of terms, alphabetical lists, construction of networks, and preparation of entries.
I also present the elements resulting from this process: the corpus, the statements, the definitions, the networks, and the entries. Finally, I offer some comments on the most complex aspects of the research.</text>

<text>This paper seeks to build bridges between Charles S. Peirce’s semiotics and literature in general. More specifically, it examines some of the categories developed by this North American semiotician, such as the phaneroscopic categories of Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness; the notion of the sign and its different types and classifications; as well as the categories of the interpretant and unlimited semiosis.
The paper also explores the explanatory and descriptive capacity of these categories in relation to the literary text, understood as a complex and stratified unit of meaning in which all its elements, from an interpretive vocation, achieve a certain articulation.</text>

<text>This paper is part of a series of studies on the modes of presence of the body in press advertisements during the twentieth century. The aspect examined here concerns what we call clothing formants, specifically brassieres and girdles, which had been shown in a previous study, corresponding to the period 1918–1940, to be a particularly conflictive aspect in the discursive constructions of that time.
In this examination, as in the study of the previous period, an attempt is made to establish connections with other media domains, especially with regard to the technical procedures of image production and the organization of scenes. These elements function as articulators of processes of semiotization that give rise to the construction of a certain body.</text>

Cultural studies, in turn, would address it only loosely, forgetting what had already been rigorously delimited.
Other points of convergence may be proposed if it is accepted that semiotic inquiry focuses on the effects and devices of meaning production, whereas cultural studies seeks to uncover the social relations articulated with them. The enterprise is never the same, but in both cases it must begin by recognizing the inevitable novelty and opacity of its objects, as well as their disorganizing impact on reading canons which, by virtue of their permanence, cannot account for the mobility of the semiotic network.</text>

It advances a new model of dualism: the dialectic of dualism, in which opposing parts are interrelated and interdependent in the formation of a whole.
This model is found throughout the social, political, economic, cosmological, and aesthetic culture of the Runakuna, as exemplified in qhari-warmi relations, the living landscape, and the woven bundles that derive from pre-Columbian funerary bundles.</text>

<text>On Civic Passions for Building Latin America seeks to go around the city in order to see it from the citizen’s point of view. It draws on the author’s previous research, in which he has attempted to design a methodology for capturing urban imaginaries in the cultural life of the two Americas. The work now seeks to think the urban from the perspective of art, including contemporary forms of public art.
Seen from this perspective, cities reveal citizen forms of expressiveness that take shape in certain everyday rituals, such as the street rounds of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, the television “fachas” on Peruvian television, dance halls in Mexico, and even the media terror of the Medellín Cartel. All these cases are presented as arguments in progress for characterizing a complex and dissimilar urban aesthetics of the Americas.</text>

<text>The central thesis of this article is that Peirce’s semiotics is also a theory of communication. This argument is based on the idea that the triadic relation of semiotics—sign, object, and interpretant—consists of general concepts abstracted from the elements of the communicative chain, which is composed of sender, message, and receiver.
In other words, the notion of sign corresponds to the less abstract notion of message; the object corresponds to the notion of sender; and the interpretant derives from the receiver. Some implications of this thesis are discussed.</text>

<text>As a social discourse, journalistic discourse is the product of a specialized communicational practice supported by a historical process that has made possible both its construction and the construction of the concept of the journalist, always in association with the institutions of society’s political system.
Journalistic discourse accounts for the practices of the producing subject, the journalist, as well as for the objects, concepts, and strategies that circulate within it. On the basis of the modalities of enunciation of televised journalistic discursive formation on socio-political issues, it is possible to establish the position occupied by the subject, which is expressed in the set of utterances and strategies deployed.
The function of the subject of the utterance, as an empty and shifting function from one utterance to another, may be performed by individuals who are different to a certain extent or by a single individual who may successively occupy different positions within a group of utterances and assume the role of different subjects. This paper seeks to establish the relationship between journalist and citizen.</text>

<text>Film semiotics is approaching its fortieth anniversary, after four decades in which it has evolved in step with the development of semiotic theories, without yet having achieved the necessary epistemological autonomy. Early film semiotics was inspired by a conception of semiotics as linguistic theory (Bobes Naves, 1973). During the 1960s and 1970s, Saussure, Hjelmslev, and Greimas provided the theoretical model to be followed, rejected, or revised in order to account for cinematic language.
As semiotic studies of the filmic text moved away from that structuralist epistemological pattern, narrative semiotics became the methodological reference that seemed most appropriate for the textual analysis of film, which in turn would naturally lead toward the domains of pragmatics.
The constitution of an autonomous subdiscipline within a general semiotics of broadly pragmatic orientation, as corresponds to Peirce’s original thought, together with the increasingly necessary interdisciplinary approach, are the two foundations that should shape the film semiotics of the future.</text>

Thus, if at the end of the millennium we arrive at the discovery that signs will become mere self-reflexive simulations, how can we avoid the realization that our own discourse annihilates itself when it reaches the conclusion that it too proves to be such a simulation?</text>
