<text>This paper deals with who shows things in Magritte’s paintings and to whom the fact that things are as they are in those paintings is attributed.
There are several paths in the proposed task that we have chosen to avoid because of their questionable heuristic value. One of them is to use Magritte as a privileged corpus to illustrate certain semantic mechanisms of Surrealism; another is to use his work as a repertoire for the semiotic description of rhetorical figures; and another is to take Magritte’s own statements and writings about his work as valid by subjecting them to semiotic treatment. The worst path of all, however, is the attempt to taxonomize his work, at any relevant level, by means of inductive, incoherent, or essayistic “methods”.
Our aim has been to increase knowledge both of Magritte’s painting and of pictorial and visual discourse in itself.
First, through two brief visual examples, genre-like and somewhat fanciful, we will examine: a) what is predicated—that is, the fact that things are one way or another in a painting; b) who its appraiser is—the discursive instance to which responsibility for the content of what is predicated in the painting is attributed; and c) who its discursivizer is—the discursive instance that shows what is predicated in the painting.
We will then outline a first typology of unusual narratological statements, rare in painting but highly present in Magritte, and discuss some of his paintings on the basis of these parameters.
Finally, we will draw the aesthetic conclusions of our analyses of Magritte’s works.</text>

              <elementText elementTextId="23350">

In this context, pedagogical discourse frequently reveals clear and marked limitations in providing the urgent responses that these transformations require from educational research.
Hence the need for tools that make it possible to think, analyze problems, guide actions, and devise alternatives based on new conditions of intelligibility. In this sense, this paper proposes an approach to the educational field from an unusual perspective: semiotics. This perspective is capable of providing theoretical and methodological strategies that make it possible to address the multiplicity of planes articulated within the fabric of pedagogical discourse.</text>

<text>Many of the problems affecting the semiotic study of visual images originate in the attempt to account for their variety from a single point of view. However, the different mental operations required to identify, recognize, and interpret them demand a specific treatment in each case, depending on whether they are purely qualitative, figurative, or normative visual perceptual proposals, or—as is most often the case—whether they integrate these three aspects in different proportions.
In this sense, without submitting to a dogmatic exegesis, this paper explores, on the basis of the Peircean triad of iconic qualisigns, iconic sinsigns, and iconic legisigns, as well as contemporary cognitive research, especially D. Marr’s theory of vision, the differential and necessary foundations for a rigorous study of the process of meaning construction in these three major groups of material visual images.</text>

<text>This paper focuses on the interrelationship between the space in which individuals develop their lives and their behavior within it, as well as on how built space facilitates—or fails to facilitate—social behavior.
From a semiotic perspective, both space and behavior can be regarded as non-verbal discourses. The analysis of these discourses, together with the verbal discourse that refers to them, constitutes a series of stages in a strategy aimed at assessing the above-mentioned space-behavior relationship.</text>

<text>The rapid transposition of categories from linguistics and literary theory to the analysis of other disciplines was one of the main reasons why the semiological project was questioned.
In the case of architecture, the main objection lay in the preeminence attributed to the specific problems of verbal language. This distorted the place that traditional graphic languages—Perspective and Monge—had held throughout history as proper instruments for accounting for architectural practice.
In order to reach an agreement on certain categories of the architectural, the question of its specificity arises, together with the need to identify a constant element: architectonicity. This may be defined, a priori, as a particular mode of formal transformation of built habitable space. It is a distinctive feature, but one subject to the fluctuations of the aesthetics of a given period and to the pragmatic perspective enabled in each historical moment.
Thus, architecture will be that which can be expressed through some socially accepted language, whether verbal or graphic. Finally, in order to delimit the concept of architectonicity as linked to a visual-graphic and non-verbal system, the theoretical and instrumental need for the graphic language TDE is proposed.</text>

For a semiotics of discourse understood as a social process, an approach is needed that systematizes the concept of social imaginaries in relation to processes of meaning production and the social construction of reality through communicative practices, with particular reference to media communication. Within this framework, semiosis is described in terms of three levels of investiture of meaning: (i) the bases of representation, corresponding to the level of imaginaries; (ii) representations, corresponding to the level of texts; and (iii) systems of representations, corresponding to discourses and regimes of signification. Special attention is paid to the functions of narrativity as a basic cognitive schema for the perception and interpretation of the world in relation to audiovisual media narratives and the legitimation of symbolic power.</text>

<text>The question of the semiotic inheritance in the Mexican context can be approached either from a historical perspective or from a disciplinary one. In this brief essay, we trace the influence of European semiotics as it is manifested in poetics and rhetoric, especially the latter.
To this end, we examine the circulation of works on rhetoric by different authors in order to determine which authors had the strongest presence. We also seek to identify which European countries and cities exerted the greatest influence on colonial Mexico, including the beginnings of independent Mexico.
To carry out this study, we undertook research in the reserved collections of the Palafoxiana Library in Puebla and of the Autonomous University of Puebla.</text>

<text>This article analyzes the rite of passage in contemporary society through the study of the fifteenth-birthday celebration, a common festivity in Venezuela and in many Latin American countries. This celebration involves a ritual of transition that makes it possible to approach the contemporary social values expressed in it.
The article postulates the hypothesis that, in our time, the rite of passage is transformed through innovation on the part of its participants into an instrument of solidarity and defense of certain family values in the face of processes that promote the globalization of culture and the reduction of diversity.
Based on Van Gennep’s model, a semiotic model of ritual signification is proposed in order to explain the structure of its functioning.</text>

<text>Contemporary semiotics would seem not to speak about the same world of objects. One of the reasons for this is the epistemological rupture introduced by so-called linguistic semiotics, represented by Saussure, Hjelmslev, and Greimas, which renounces the external referent in relation to the logical-cognitive and philosophical tradition. However, this linguistic semiotics must confront anti-materialist, cognitivist, and logical prejudices in order to advance as a science of language.
This paper reflects on those prejudices and proposes the need to integrate, through the term “transubstantiation”, the intimate correlation between the material signifying plane of semiotic forms and substances and the plane of content. It also develops a reinsertion of the passional subject as a “paper subject”, one that nevertheless leaves in the text the marks of the “body that enunciates and feels”, in order to move toward a theory of enunciative praxis.</text>

<text>This paper presents a semiotic proposal for the algebraic formalization of “Imaginary Information”. The Imaginary, as opposed to the symbolic, has often been conceptualized in semiotic psychoanalytic theory as an instance that does not convey information. However, authors such as Petitot-Cocorda, together with empirical evidence, support the need to construct a methodological tool for apprehending this type of information.
The conceptualization operationalized here is that of the unconscious as referring to a “signifying physics”, close to the approaches of W. Reich and to the theory of electroacoustic music. A theory appropriate to these theoretical outlines cannot be constituted as a theory of codes, since it refers not to their sign characteristics, but rather to perceptual realities that are ethnographically configured.
The proposed algebraic formalization brings two situations into coherence: stability, through an axiomatization of Boolean algebra following Salomon Marcus; and catastrophe, through the formalization proposed by René Thom.</text>

<text>In this paper, I relate a set of practices and discourses concerning the popular Galician literary tradition, understood as an expression of the feelings and literary and rural life of the Galician people, which still survive at the end of our millennium. I approach this tradition from a semiotic perspective and through both diachronic and synchronic viewpoints, taking into account static and dynamic elements.
In these legendary echoes, which still resonate today in orientational metaphors, customs, and genres, I recover the traditions that link our past with the present. I also analyze the connection between culture and nature, in which human beings act as the guiding thread through a personified nature that adopts humanizing semes. Nature thus becomes another character, as if endowed with sensitivity and feelings, behaving as a living and powerful being that protects or torments human beings, hence their mutual relationship.</text>

<text>The migratory movement that took place especially between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries between Europe and America involved the mobilization of systems of collective representations and symbolic universes. These are particularly evident in women’s testimonial language, since women were generally positioned on the margins of institutions.
We are especially interested in the case of one such woman, located at the most rejected extreme of the social fabric because she practiced prostitution. This situation gives rise to a polarized discourse that makes it possible to observe how the social imaginary sustains a form of social mobility marked by ideological elements. Due to certain characteristics in the personal history of the figure under study, this discourse becomes an effective component in the exercise of power within the community life of Tucumán.</text>

After establishing an epistemological orientation, formulating some definitions, and outlining a number of antecedents in the study of color and of the appearance produced by the distribution of light in space, this paper proposes that semiotics can function as an appropriate theoretical framework for organizing and encompassing the different fields from which these aspects have traditionally been studied: physics, chemistry, physiology, neurophysiology, psychology of perception, and psychophysics.</text>

<text>In recent decades, the social sciences have witnessed an inflation of studies on what, not without considerable ambiguity, may be called the symbolic. This should lead us to think that semiotics, linked to the study of this domain of meanings known as the symbolic, would have undergone a corresponding quantitative and qualitative expansion.
Indeed, the term “semiotics” appears frequently across broad areas of these disciplines. However, what semiotics may be, the place it may occupy, and its possible connection with those disciplines remain far from clearly defined. Consequently, among a multiplicity of works—which we group into two major “traditions”: that of superstructures and that of the text—semiotics can be and do so many things that, strictly speaking, this results in a blurring of its features and in the lack of specificity of its tasks.
This paper will attempt to account for this state of affairs, while also formulating some positive observations on the matter.</text>
