<text>This article describes and analyzes a set of marriage ties recorded between 1869 and 1899, corresponding to the rural settlements that make up the present-day Department of Valle Grande in the province of Jujuy.
From a methodological perspective based on Social Network Analysis (SNA), information on conjugal unions was organized using the spouses’ surnames as the main reference. The links among them were then graphed, along with the principal attributes arising from the ties present in the network.
Toward the end of the paper, after presenting the network analysis of the data processed with UCINET software, a series of categories are analyzed. These categories constitute central axes for sociocultural analysis linked to kinship studies, such as endogamy, place of residence, village endogamy, and the boundaries between endogamy and exogamy.
Finally, in the conclusions, possible analytical lines are established on the basis of formal social network analysis as a valid methodological alternative for characterizing marriage ties, referential surnames, and networks of spatial mobility among the inhabitants of Valle Grande toward the end of the nineteenth century.</text>

<text>Languages intersect where ethics and politics also meet. No identity is entirely self-contained, nor does any language remain pure: both emerge through their relation with what exceeds and unsettles them. Yet the logic of identity and the nation-state often turns difference into threat and the other into an enemy, making exclusion, violence, and death possible conditions of self-affirmation. Within this same horizon, language may relinquish its capacity for hospitality and translation and become an instrument of war, subjected to discourses that silence, homogenize, or erase otherness. Against this logic of the Same, heteronomy makes it possible to conceive a subjectivity that is always preceded and addressed by the other. Translation then appears not merely as a passage between languages, but as a condition of language itself and as a possible space of ethical and political resistance. A rereading of Babel through the promise of plurality, together with the examination of the Palestine-Israel conflict, reveals the consequences of imposing a single language, identity, or narrative. Where translation necessarily remains unfinished, listening to the voice of the other opens the possibility of imagining a politics different from war: a politics of otherness.</text>

<text>The privatization of the Altos Hornos Zapla steelmaking center marked the end of a socioeconomic project conceived within the framework of modernity. Until the early 1990s, local decision-making had been monopolized by the state-owned company, even though it shared jurisdiction with the municipality of Palpalá. This later represented the moment of emergence of civil society as a protagonist of social life in Palpalá.
Our work sought to give voice to the evocative processes of the actors who lived through these circumstances, since social memory is selective and therefore meaningful rather than neutral: the recurrence of certain narratives accounts for the record of change. Drawing on data collected through interviews, we present elements fixed in social memory, identifying changes in everyday practices and the ways in which they were addressed.
Produced after privatization, these changes were marked by the crisis of a world of certainties. Differentiated ways of coping with them also emerged, according to the social position and ties of the agents. For the inhabitants of Palpalá, this crisis would have meaning as a starting point in the transformation of the practices and social relations of the agents.
We consider it important to move forward in the analysis of how Palpalá residents registered these changes associated with the privatization of Zapla, in order to study transformations in agency within the framework of the conflictive processes of the 1990s.</text>

<text>Numerous historical studies have addressed first Peronism from different perspectives. However, most of them have approached the phenomenon from a national standpoint or by paying special attention to events in Buenos Aires. In recent years, this extensive bibliography has been joined by another of an “extra-centric” nature, which began to inquire into Peronism in the different provinces and national territories.
Jujuy was not outside this current, since works have been published on different aspects of Peronism in the province. Yet, beyond the relevance of these contributions, very little has been investigated regarding the first Justicialist governors or the social policies they implemented in this district.
The purpose of this historical paper is precisely to help fill this gap by analyzing the housing policy of the first Peronist governor of Jujuy: Alberto Iturbe. Emphasis is placed on his political trajectory, his actions regarding the social question, and, fundamentally, the most salient features of his housing policy.
Thus, through the study of different sources from the period—official publications, newspapers, among others—this paper seeks to unveil certain aspects of that social policy carried out by one of the most important figures of first Peronism in the far north of the Argentine Republic.</text>

<text>This article analyzes public health actions aimed at the Bolivian population residing in Jujuy. In particular, it describes those included in the ARBOL II Program, which were oriented toward controlling the cholera outbreaks of the early 1990s. It also addresses statements made by politicians regarding the right of foreigners to receive care in public health services.
The article concludes that the specificity of migratory status does not appear to have grounded targeted health practices. It also shows variations in the discursive construction of migrants and their movements, who were regarded as carriers of sanitary danger. These changes are associated with the decline in the demand for agricultural labor, the reduction of migrant stocks, the urbanization of this population, and the crisis of the Welfare State.
The article concludes that the initially inclusive position, together with the defunding of the public sector and the crisis of the health system in the 1990s, became exclusionary and came to openly question the right of foreigners from neighboring countries to receive free health care.</text>

<text>The existence of critical levels of poverty in numerous neighborhoods of Greater San Miguel de Tucumán accounts for the extent and intensity of the problem in this city and, in some way, expresses the deep social deterioration that has occurred in recent decades. The prevailing conditions of insertion into the labor market would largely explain the difficulties households face in overcoming levels of deprivation.
In this context, a peripheral neighborhood of the city, known as Costanera Norte, was selected. Characterized by a high incidence and intensity of poverty, it was chosen in order to analyze, on the one hand, the forms of labor-market insertion of its population and, on the other, the importance and specificity assumed by cartoneo as the dominant work activity.
The study uses data from the 2001 National Population, Households, and Housing Census, as well as results from semi-structured interviews conducted in 2011 with a group of families from the neighborhood regarding housing and socioeconomic conditions.
The results make it possible to identify the relationship between cartoneo and the persistence of poverty, insofar as it is an intergenerational work activity carried out by a majority sector of the neighborhood’s households. This activity only makes it possible to maintain subsistence levels.</text>

<text>At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Catamarca, whose economic structure had historically been characterized as traditional and limited, was the province in northern Argentina with the lowest levels of poverty. Tucumán, by contrast, which had the most dynamic economy in the region, showed higher levels of deprivation.
Considering that poverty is related to the transformations undergone by a productive structure through the employment problems these transformations generate, the aim of this article is to examine the relationships between economic transformations and the employment problems experienced by the economically active populations of Catamarca and Tucumán during the period 1990–2002, years in which neoliberal transformations were consolidated in Argentina.
In economic terms, the study considered indicators reflecting the dynamics of agricultural activities, manufacturing industry, and the tertiary sector in both economies. In the labor sphere, unemployment and underemployment rates were examined, as well as certain characteristics of the economically active population of each province.
During the years under study, Tucumán experienced greater deterioration in its labor market, since its economy was more deeply affected by the economic changes of the late twentieth century. Catamarca’s economy, by contrast, while going through incipient stages of economic development, was less harmed by neoliberal economic transformations. There, the State maintained a more significant presence, acting as a mitigating factor for economic difficulties in Catamarca’s labor market.</text>

<text>From a socio-spatial perspective, one of the most important transformations that has occurred in the urban structure of Greater San Miguel de Tucumán (GSMT) since the 1970s has been the change in patterns of expansion. On this basis, the main objective of this article is to study and compare the logics of occupation of urban space through the analysis of shantytowns (VM) and gated communities (UC) in Yerba Buena Municipality (MYB), taking into account the municipality’s participation in the formation process of the GSMT agglomeration.
The study takes the 1970s as its point of departure, a period in which the city expanded strongly toward its periphery, characterized mainly by the increase in shantytowns together with the emergence of the first gated community. Urban expansion shows exponential growth in gated communities, while the area occupied by shantytowns has remained practically unchanged.
In MYB, the most significant contrast is represented by the coexistence of gated communities and shantytowns. Gated communities are a rapidly growing trend and drive expansion by occupying large extensions of land. By contrast, the increase in shantytowns is limited, especially considering their proliferation in the rest of GSMT. Nevertheless, many of these gated communities and shantytowns are located very close to one another, while the socioeconomic distance separating their inhabitants continues to widen, accentuating the gap between both groups.</text>

En Discusión y Conclusiones destacamos lo que, a nuestro juicio, son los principales aportes y también las limitaciones de la obra de este sociólogo chileno.ABSTRACTThe epistemic-methodological proposal of Hugo Zemelman is one of the most original productions that the Latin American academic world has given in the last decades. The revision of Zemelman’s intellectual production shows its impact in the scientific field of the social sciences. However, it is usual the partial reference to one or some categories of the work without allowing to evaluate the production of the author as a whole. From this finding, we carry out a review of articles and books written by the author and select those materials and categories that, would allow to compose a panorama of the way in which his proposal considers the epistemological and methodological issue in the social sciences. A series of observations articulated with the exhibition of the Zemelmanian categories call for reflection on possible aporiae present in them. In Discussion and Conclusions, we highlight what, in our opinion, are the main contributions and also the limitations of the work of the Chilean sociologist. Keywords: Organizing concepts; critical construction of knowledge; Human being; Critical use of theory.</text>

<text>This paper analyzes materiality in three associated enclosures in Sector II of the Pueblo Perdido de la Quebrada site, Catamarca Valley. The aim of this study is to characterize the multiple facets of these associated enclosures in order to determine the daily practices carried out inside them, which would account for an organization of socially shared, recurrent, and accepted activities.
Our study was conducted through an extensive excavation, which allowed us to analyze the materials recovered, determine their distribution and association in space, and relate pottery in particular—through refitting, decoration, and forms—to the features and structures present in each of the excavated enclosures. This made it possible to formulate particular characteristics of the organization and use of domestic space inside each enclosure.
On this basis, possible areas of daily activity were inferred, and the processed information was related to the Ambato Valley. Consequently, we interpret the enclosures as a set of functionally equivalent units within a residential unit, where both particular and common characteristics made it possible to recognize a space in which a series of activities took place, linked in different recurrent domestic sequences. These sequences materialized social relations that reinforced, or attempted to maintain, a kind of continuity in time and space.</text>

<text>This paper explores the experience of the First Congress of Argentine Commerce, held in Rosario in 1911. Our objective is to approach the problem of business and corporate sociability from a twofold perspective.
On the one hand, the paper seeks to highlight the configuration of this type of event in terms of forms of sociability built on institutional bases that also moved through informal instances and developed within immediate temporal limits. On the other hand, it aims to describe the elements present in the elaboration of an agenda of issues shared by the dominant group in Rosario and by its regional counterparts within the national arena.
The congress was a singular and emerging instance of solid economic associative expressions that manifested themselves within the framework of the liberal State. At the same time, it represented an image that went beyond the rigid institutional figures of economic corporations, by making possible other forms of management and estate-based dialogue.</text>

<text>This paper analyzes the early works of Ricardo Rojas’s nationalist thought—La Restauración Nacionalista, Blasón de Plata, and La Argentinidad—in which we will examine the emergence of a new critical approach to the “civilizing-racist” postulates characteristic of nineteenth-century Argentine thought.
Rojas creates a historical-cultural concept of the nation in which previously brutalized identity-bearing subjects—the Indigenous person, the criollo, and the Spaniard—come to form part of a pluricultural and multiethnic concept of nationality, represented by the spirit of Indianism. The author argues for the need to disseminate these ideas in order to lead Argentina out of the “identity disorientation” in which it found itself, as a result of the expansion of “cosmopolitan” and “exoticist” ideologies.
Rojas plays a fundamental role within the State as a planner of nationalist educational policies and also as the creator of their study materials. For this reason, Rojas must be understood as a hegemonic intellectual of great weight in the design of state policies aimed at shaping and “nationalizing” Argentina’s multicultural population at the beginning of the twentieth century.</text>

<text>The “academic novel” or “campus novel” emerged after the Second World War in Great Britain and the United States of America, and has evolved according to contextual circumstances. Set in university environments, the conflicts, intrigues, and anecdotes presented by this type of text reveal, through parody, humor, and self-referentiality, the vicissitudes of the daily lives of teachers and students in the university sphere.
In this context, populated by such characters, stories develop and intertwine, without sparing favorable or unfavorable, sarcastic, and ironic comments on academic life itself—its obligations and demands, setbacks, achievements, and frustrations experienced on a daily basis—and on those who construct it through their everyday work: men and women who have chosen, at best, to belong to this sphere of constant intellectual challenges.
In this paper, we will analyze and relate Changing Places: A Tale of Two Campuses (1975) and The Art of Fiction (1998), by the English writer David Lodge. Through discourse analysis, this will allow us to perceive an interesting and fluid dialogue among fiction, literary theory, history, and the evolution of Anglo-Saxon literature, within a critique of academia and the university.</text>

<text>The narrative of Joselín Cerda Rodríguez, a writer from Catamarca and a native of Tinogasta, is of special interest within the framework of a broader research project currently under way as a postgraduate thesis. We suggest that this is a form of writing that seeks to produce a change in extratextual space, insofar as it presents itself as the expression of a sense of identity-based belonging, both personal and collective, in which memory constitutes a point of support for recovering and preserving the past of the original inhabitants of the Andean region and their descendants.
The articulation of the texts with their historical, geographical, social, cultural, and symbolic context is one of the perspectives chosen for the analysis. The other perspective is thematic and centers on the study of death. The article is based on the hypothesis that, in the narrated world, there are no distinctions among the living, the dead, and benign or malignant spirits; these forms of alterity enter and leave the represented everyday world and interact with the characters recreated in the texts.
The core of meaning derived from the texts is grounded in this contiguity between life and death. The question, then, is to ask what this particularity is due to, or to what element or elements it may be attributed. The interpretive reading is based on the following texts: “La viuda”, “La salamanca”, and “Don Pánfilo y la Luz Mala”, from Tinogasta en la leyenda (1996); “El rostro de la muerte”, from Cuentos de la realidad y la ficción (2001); and “El velorio”, from Estampas del pasado (2002).
The article concludes that the mythical-symbolic background characteristic of Northwestern Argentina and the Andean macro-region gives rise to a spiritual culture, a way of manifesting itself in everyday life and, therefore, of projecting itself into art.</text>
