Tal situación obedece a multicausalidades que empujan paulatinamente a las familias en busca básicamente de su supervivencia. Las comunidades originarias de Gral. Ballivián, Dpto. San Martin, Prov. de Salta, son la expresión de esta realidad, los escenarios prístinos son ilustraciones del ayer. San Martin (Pvcia de Salta) es una zona característica por su importante componente étnico; en tal sentido la etnia mayoritaria es la Wichi, que se caracteriza por su lucha en conservar pautas tradicionales, dentro de las cuales se destaca la lengua nativa que aún se conserva y se practica al interior de los grupos de las familias, a diferencia de otros grupos étnicos.
