<text>In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries a literate genre of travelers’ tales created the Puna de Atacama (Atacama plateau). The geography, its inhabitants and its history were depicted in terms of an extremely marginal landscape. The genre was framed and demarcated through the transposing of the experience of the travel across that territory; thus, the territory was singularized as distant and objectified as strange. Following the characterization of the genre that gave place to the Puna de Atacama as a textual landscape, I offer two frameworks for its contextualization. In the first place, the textual landscape is confronted with the history of the material landscapes from the same region, that is, with those objective realities made subjective by the travelers. In the second place, I go through the role of textualization of the Puna and its broader social and historical framework, that is, those subjective realities made objective by the travelers.</text>

Here I will develop the basic outline of a model built up from linguistic interaction, and applied to the elaboration of a micro study of place names in the Quebrada de Purmamarca. Thus, I consider the study of place names as a dynamic way of studying space and names as information sender communication units.c)The influence of Boman’s concepts in XX century studies of place names.</text>

</text>

<text>The aim of my paper is to discuss the relevance of the Swedish Chaco-Cordilleras expedition for the ethnography of the Argentine Puna. For a critical reading of Eric von Rosen’s work “En förgången värld“ I take my own ethnographic experience in an neighbouring area of the Andean highlands (Puna de Atacama) into account. The analysis elucidates three important contributions of von Rosen’s book. On the one hand, it is a document of the European perception of the landscape in this part of the Andes. On the other hand, the book offers a series of details about the mode of living of the indigenous inhabitants of the puna at the beginning of the XXth century. Beyond that, it is also a testimony of the encounter of two cultures out of unequal positions of power.</text>

<text>The interdisciplinary Chaco-Cordillera expedition in 1901–1902, led by Erland Nordenskiöld, has been followed by a number of Swedish collecting expeditions to Latin America during the last century. The results from those expeditions are today reflected in the stores at Swedish museums. At the National Museum of World Cultures (the former Ethnographic Museum in Gothenburg) there are approximately one hundred thousand archaeological and ethnographical objects, of which almost 70 percent originates from South America. The majority of these came to the museum through Erland Nordenskiöld, his students and contacts. The history of these objects has continued since they came to the museum. In the yearbooks and in correspondence among other written sources, it can be read how they gone through exhibitions, research, restoration and conservation treatments, or they have just been stored away. In all these cases the natural process of deterioration, which in principle can’t be stopped, has had an effect on the museum’s collections. In this work, insight is given into how exposure to light, humidity, temperature changes, air pollution, handling and so on effect have effected different materials and lead to changes in the internal structure and outer appearance of the artefacts.</text>

<text>The results of an exploratory research design on the interpretative potential of the inventory records of the Doncellas Collection curated at Museo Etnográfico of Buenos Aires (UBA) are presented. Excavated materials recorded during 1941-43 expeditions sponsored by the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales were obtained from the Doncellas site in the western part of the Argentinean highland plateau (Dept. of Cochinoca, Puna de Jujuy, Argentina). The archaeological site of Doncellas is spatially culturally related to the necropolis, which is characterized by chullpas and walled caves. Our study emphasizes the social aspects involved in the funerary contexts at Doncellas with the purpose of obtaining quantitative and contextual data from the inventory records, which were combined in our research design using cluster analysis. Discussion proceeds with an interpretation of our results of the variability in mortuary practices. Emphasis is focused upon the way in which the mortuary remains were recovered, and our results indicate that material variability may be explained as reflecting social markers, which from a bio-archaeological perspective, are correlated with social organization, and linked with certain resources at both intra and inter-population levels. These markers have both temporal and spatial correlates. The strengths and weaknesses of our approach, particularly those imposed by the nature of the contexts, allow us to emphasize the need to excavate funerary contextswithin a framework of relative precision to ensure accuracy in recording, in order to be able to use the contextual data with greater confidence and accuracy.</text>

<text>The first antropometric evaluation of Susques population was carried out by Dr. A. Chervin in June of 1903. The report consigned, among others auxologic variables, the height of 30 adults masculine individuals. Current investigations indicate, for the masculine adult population of the Puna, a smaller positive secular trend with respect to other regions of province located next to sea level. The aim of this work was, recapturing the Chervin data jointly with those of more recent populations, evaluate the evolution of the attained size and the secular trend of the adult masculine population of Susques from 1900 until 1960. The recent data proceeds of the Citizens Identification Books of the Jujuy Military District. The sample (N=487), including the data of Chervin, was divided in 7 decades. The average and standar deviation was calculated and the results were compared with provincial, national and Amerindians references. The average attained size for all the period was 160.87 cm, less than both the provincial and the national references for the same period, resulting these differences statistically significant (P<0.05). When it is compared the average attained size with Amerindians references, thi was smaller and greater than that of the Aymaras and Quechua speaking respectively(P<0.05). It was observed a positive secular trend, with a variable increase among decades, that for the total of the period was of 3,21 cm. It is concluded that, in spite of to chronic effect of the geographical height and the socieconomics conditions associated to this ecosystem, the masculine adult population of Susques presents a positive diachronic variation of the growth. This same evolutionary factor, together with the biological characteristics of these populations, would be explain the smaller size reached by the adult masculine Susques population with respect to both the national and provincial references.</text>

The identification of societies in this area constituting “Jefaturas de la Floresta Tropical”, from criteria based on preconceptions requires the reassessment of regional prehistory from the causal point of view. Benian archeology (Llanos de Mojos) is fundamentally known, from the Erland Nordenskiöld excavations, who undoubtedly sets the conceptual bases existing up to date. Between the years 1977 and 1981 a Mission of Museo de La Plata (Argentina),under the direction of B. Such contribution helped to clarify, but not to simplify, the regional pre-Hispanic outlook, very important in the South American archeological thematic. An exhaustive bibliographic list that facilitates the access to the knowledge of that large area complements the presentation.</text>

<text>The settlement known as “El Moreno” has gone a long way throughout the 20th Century. Moreno is included in the Argentine territory consolidation during the Argentine National government. I was determined to explore and know all the possible resources for export, with to intention of incorporating this vast region into the national society, sponsoring a number of different specialities (agronomists, geologists, naturalists, archeologists, etc.) that in the last decades of the 19th Century, travelled in the Puna, such as Philipp (1860), Brakebush (1883), Holmeberg (1900), Boman (1901 y 1908) Von Rosen and others that were joined by government officials to see the situation in the ´Puna´. Cerri and Sanchez de Bustamante. Because of their contribution we can say that, some of them with greater descriptive than others, some of them true chroniclers due to the comprehensiveness and wealth of their stories, but all of them wrote reports that were about detailed observations that have come to us like a picture that shows us the landscape and societies they visited. We have read the description carried out by Boman about this community at the turn of the Century. (1900) Boman says “There are many traces of a prehispanic population and documents which demonstrate that this place was permanentely inhabited from the begining of the Spanish conquest”. Because of all these it´s a very agreeable situation next to a fresh water stream, I cannotdoubt “El Moreno is “Tambo El Moreno de Matienzo” Boman also mentions in his work a number of details he was able to see while he was at “El Moreno”, there he saw the way Mrs Ana Sorich the owner of “El Moreno´s wife, treated the indians. That is to say that considering this report and investigating the so called ´evolution´? From their primitive state of bondage Boman found them tobecoming Argentine citizens, though marginal ones, to their current situation.Nowadays “El Moreno” population is constituted by an urban settlement together with its rural surroundings that includes about eighty families. Nonetheless in this process of “growing urbanization of rural dwellers”, we have found there has also been a social phenomenon of citizens trying to recover their history. This has been produced because people have a new identity status, they want to reconstruct their aboriginal identity, expressed in the creation of an aborigenal organization “Sol de Mayo”, they get in contact with other communities as well as with the State through this organization. This research work is about the process developed in this period, experiences expressed by present actors and their present reflection on their recent past and their implications of the community’s present and future.</text>

We can read these images at two different levels: one, a strictly semiotic level, and the other, an ethnographic level, in the frame of late 19th century scientific societies and the building of the anthropological field as a discipline. We will emphasize the means of territories´ apropiation, the travelers type of registration, the symbolic violence produced by these men of science at the communities and the bordering of “other´s “ particular way of looking, analyzing civilized and European ways of looking on “barbarian” ways.</text>

<text>To observe and describe different worlds is an impassionating task but a very complex one. And complexity can be stated with a question: How do I say from my perception of the world that that has significance in other cultural spheres? Only inside the space of culture, communication processes are possible; that is, the processes through which things obtain sense.Outside this space, only a space of the chaotic can be perceived. It is for that reason that in this judgement we intend to state de dissolutions or fractures that arise at a discursive level in the descriptions made by Eric Boman in his journey along the Puna Jujeña. To transit the space of the American Other hand in hand with the archaeologist takes us to begin a voyage through the boundariesof culture. When we say boundary, we are entering a zone of transactions and cultural translations from which the producing subject can with difficulty come out unpolluted. Thus, we pretend to show in which way the scientist discourse disarranges and in which way participates of the circuit of belief production, without being a believer himself. In other words, we will try to describe that night in the puna in which Eric Boman met Coquena.</text>
