<text>Reading a cultural text, whatever its type, not only makes it possible to understand the overall configuration of a culture; it can also serve as a privileged path for identifying the transformations that such a culture may have undergone.
Northwestern Argentina is culturally characterized by the preservation of ancestral traditions and customs that contributed to the configuration of the idiosyncrasy and worldview of ancient civilizations and that, in one way or another, have been transmitted from generation to generation.
For this paper, we have chosen a text originally characterized by ritual: the Pin-Pin, a mixture of sacred and profane cultural symbols of clearly tribal roots, whose ceremonial features have been preserved in oral memory. These features can be recovered through a Lotmanian semiotic reading in order to generate new intercommunications.
A series of accounts was collected in several localities of the Jujuy Ramal region and in the capital city concerning what the Pin-Pin means, in order to account for its transculturation after the arrival of the Spaniards.</text>

<text>The discovery of the mutilated image of Christ in its sanctuary, located in the highlands of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, shocks the parishioners of the nearby locality. After the initial moment of astonishment, a series of assumptions arise concerning the perpetrators of the act, as well as subsequent discussions regarding whether the image should be restored or replaced.
Various narratives emerge around the making of the original figure of Christ and that of the Virgin, which was located in a nearby chapel. Reference is also made to the actions of a priest, a representative of Liberation Theology, who had been questioned some years earlier, and continues to be questioned even today by a sector of local and provincial society.
The discourse of oral narrative on this subject can show us the conceptualization of part of “social reality”. It is of interest to observe how oral narratives reveal, in their semantic content, a way of seeing the world. At the same time, through their formal organization, they also structure a way of categorizing the social world.
Categories, schemes, and models are the central concepts that guide our inquiry and make it possible to draw inferences about local power relations. The references that appeared in informal conversations also help explain the discursive position of the speakers. The analysis of these references provides data that can be related to the direct or symbolic action of various disciplinary institutions operating in our society.</text>

<text>The central objective of this paper is to demonstrate, through discourse analysis, that the Peruvian chronicler Guaman Poma de Ayala left in his work Nueva corónica y buen gobierno not only a record of everyday life during the colonial period, but also texts that reveal his skill as a writer in using writing, a Spanish legacy, to constitute through it a front of resistance against colonization and a way of granting permanence to the values proper to Andean culture.
The discourse analysis is based on the proposals of Émile Benveniste and Mikhail Bakhtin, emphasizing the subjectivity of language and the dialogism that emerges from the interaction of different voices.
The chronicler achieves a communicative process that attempts to establish a dialogue between cultures, although this dialogue is not fully accomplished. Nevertheless, his discourse inaugurates in the Andean region what we currently recognize as the heterogeneity of the American subject.</text>

<text>Many communities in the province of Jujuy still preserve a rich oral tradition whose origins go back to pre-Hispanic times. These oral discourses have undergone permanent reworkings as a result of their conflictive intersection with the colonial cultural universe.
By royal mandate, priests and colonial officials initiated a manipulation of these texts, which conferred identity on the pre-Hispanic subject and through which they sought to establish new sociocultural paradigms in America. Drawing on Aristotelian doctrines, the rational incapacity of the Indigenous person was demonstrated, and in this way the policy of domination of the more perfect over the less perfect was affirmed.
Missionaries were responsible for the manipulation of the imaginary of Indigenous communities. Trained in the use of the word, they took possession of Indigenous discourses. They emptied them of the contents that gave them meaning and had governed the pre-Hispanic world. They filled them with new meanings, often opposed and contradictory to the worldview of the native peoples of America.
This paper seeks to observe how, in the stories of the Ukumar, the potentialities of evangelizing discourse can be reactivated through the updating of the image of the monstrous as an image of racial degeneration.
Approaching the reading of the different versions of the Ukumar is an attempt to reactivate fragments of the discourse of evangelization, which is summoned in these texts through the monstrous and intensified by the description of the satanic.</text>

<text>Official religion promotes the pilgrimage to the town of Río Blanco, in the department of Palpalá, province of Jujuy, Argentina, where devotion is paid to the Virgin of the same name. This pilgrimage takes place every year on the four Sundays of October and brings together people from different parts of the province.
Although many people participate in the pilgrimage to Río Blanco as an expression of religious devotion, for other attendees the celebration constitutes a social gathering linked to spectacle and secular entertainment. This latter practice is informally encouraged by the Church as a means of attraction in order to maintain the celebration’s relevance.
The theoretical and methodological framework follows Foucauldian lines. This study proceeds through contrast and comparison with other instances, seeking to identify ruptures from a constructive standpoint. This standpoint finds its limit in the emergence of contradiction. The analysis begins with seven interviews conducted with pilgrims and with people who participate in the social spectacle. These discourses make it possible to trace the ramifications that different statements generate around the same topic. To this end, the field of emergence, delimitation, and specificity of these statements are taken into account.
In conclusion, the festivity of the Virgin constructs a semiotic boundary constituted by profane activities. The boundary that separates the sacred from profane activities allows for the legitimation of all cultural spaces, but, above all, it generates the reproduction and strengthening of the religious core, which remains immovable precisely because of the presence of these other spheres.</text>

<text>Today, any observer of social and political reality is aware of the strong tensions that exist between the “world of economists” and the “world of people”. This essay seeks to explore the relationship between economics and culture, a topic of interest to several disciplines, although the analysis will be limited here to the relationship between economic science and anthropology.
This paper raises two basic questions as axes of connection between economics and anthropology. The first concerns anthropology, its position, and the methodological problems it has faced when dealing with the economic question. The second involves a reflection, from the perspective of economics, on culture as a central issue in the behavior of the economic system. Culture has been widely considered by anthropology, but not with the same intensity by economics.
Economics has not limited itself to constituting a scientific discipline whose field of action is confined to the academic world or to economic relations. Rather, it has criteria for observing reality, assumptions regarding human values, and a particular way of reasoning and thinking that extends to all fields of human life, shaping a way of seeing things and a particular perspective on reality. This characteristic defines a culture, which we call “economism”, and which differs from “economicism” insofar as the latter is a monetary reductionism of the former.
Both in the relationship between economics and other disciplines and in other aspects of culture, economism places economics and its “vision” in a central position, comparable to ethnocentrism. Attempts to bring economics closer to other disciplines, abandoning the central position of economics, are presented as efforts to make these relationships horizontal, as cultural relativism seeks to do. In this way, economism is presented as one culture among others, respectful of the rest.
Finally, the paper seeks to show that economism emerges from social relations and forms part of a dominant culture, in which only certain sectors of those groups participated, and that it expanded as relations among economic sectors were transformed. From this legitimist view of economism, the naïve perspective of transdisciplinarity is called into question, as is any consideration of economism as a form of cultural relativism.</text>

<text>In recent years, reflections on the principles underlying regional historiographical reconstructions have become frequent. The reconstruction considered here arises from the intention to integrate the cultural dimension of social processes into regional-level analysis. From our perspective, the operative value of the concept of “region” may lie in its capacity to demarcate the horizon traversed by the multiple relations that define social experience. The region would thus mark the upper limit of the historical-cultural context to which practices may initially be referred, providing integrative keys in terms of the action/structure duality.
Microhistory explicitly enters the debate generated by the current shift of interest toward the conceptual and methodological issues of the discipline. The meaning experienced by actors in their practices is captured through strong contextualization, oriented toward the historical framework and the cultural system within which the rationality involved in action becomes intelligible. Following this theoretical-methodological proposal, we postulate here that the framework of this intensive historical-cultural contextualization could be defined in regional terms.</text>

<text>This paper aims to discuss the problem of popular culture on the basis of three main axes: the “culture of poverty”, the culture of decline, or new poverty, and the influence of labor transformations on ways of life.
Regarding the meaning of so-called popular culture, within the framework provided by Grignon and Passeron, the views of different authors are reviewed. The paper concludes that, between relativism and its distortion, populism, and legitimism and its extreme, miserabilism, an intermediate position should be sought, one that takes into account the conflicts and tensions between them. It also concludes that popular culture has its own mechanisms, which differentiate it from high culture, while always remaining embedded in a relationship of domination.
The “culture of poverty” is approached through Lewis’s perspective, while also taking into account the criticisms it has received. Lewis highlights the positive aspect of poverty, insofar as it provides defense mechanisms that allow the poor to “keep going”. He emphasizes the transmissible character, from generation to generation, of what he calls the “culture of poverty”, and points out the existence of its own modalities and the consequences it has for those who find themselves in this situation.
In Argentina, during the final decades of the twentieth century, in addition to the worsening of living conditions for vast sectors of the population, there was a growing impoverishment of the middle classes, a process that also generated significant changes in the everyday practices of these groups. This issue is addressed as the “culture of decline” among the newly poor. A connection can be identified between impoverishment and the weakening of the “wage-earning condition”; in this sense, the paper examines the influence of labor transformations on ways of life and popular culture.</text>

<text>In order to explore the meaning or meanings that the phenomenon of urban identity or identities in San Salvador de Jujuy acquired in the Jujuy press, as a result of the competition among the discourses that enunciated it, a corpus of journalistic articles published in the Jujuy newspapers Crónica and El Día during the period 1943–1945 was compiled. In these articles, discursive formations concerning the city were traced, as well as the differential valuation of its actors and spaces.
The chronicles published by these newspapers constituted a way of imposing order on a world in transformation, the small everyday world of the city, at a moment when the available categories were no longer sufficient. In the search for new demarcations, Crónica and El Día resorted to ethnicity read in a colonial, racialist, or Romantic key; to the authority of the national capital as a measure of taste; to Hispanist discourse as a safeguard for threatened harmony; to gender as a barrier between public and private space; to tourism as a new actor determining projects; and to the differential management of space as a possibility for restoring order.
These newspapers maintained that San Salvador de Jujuy was a city, that it needed space and modernity, and also that it was necessary to remember the past. None of these terms is unequivocal. The city is constructed in opposition to other cities, or to some of them, and to nature, which is also a particular kind of nature. Space and modernity, in turn, are managed within projects that link them to a historical tradition granting rights to some inhabitants and not to others.</text>

In this paper, their works are taken up as sources of information in order to identify the social actors of rural Tucumán and to understand their living conditions. At the same time, however, the perspectives and “points of view” of the three authors on the social reality they describe are also analyzed.
In this regard, I consider that a cognitive structure common to all three authors intervened in the representations of that world as it was perceived and reflected by them: “scientific culture”.</text>

<text>This paper examines the legal phenomenon of filiation claims in order to assess the documentary and empirical value of these case files for analyzing some of the issues that constitute points of interest for cultural history, such as the connections between popular culture and elite culture, the history of mentalities, cultural hegemony, and others.
The information comes from case files concerning claims for natural filiation, corresponding to the period 1900–1925, housed in the Court Archives of the province of Jujuy, as well as from legal texts from the same period that comment on Title V of the Argentine Civil Code, which regulates this type of claim.
On the basis of this preliminary and temporally delimited research, filiation emerges as a fertile field, both methodologically and theoretically, for the current interests of cultural history. This paper points out some aspects of the confluences and derivations that arise when approaching the issue of filiation from the social and anthropological perspective of cultural history. Each of these aspects requires further bibliographical, theoretical, analytical, and interpretive development.
In the province of Jujuy between 1900 and 1925, despite the high percentage of children born out of wedlock, filiation claims did not constitute a socially acceptable practice. Although legally possible, such claims were limited by religious and moral factors that were more repressive toward women. Nor can it be excluded that, in certain social sectors, especially rural and less modernized ones, illegitimacy did not form part of the imaginary and representations of these societies.
On the basis of the analysis of a particular case, it is also hypothesized that, during this period, the existing social order probably cannot be explained solely through a scheme of dominant classes versus dominated classes. On the contrary, fissures between social and symbolic domination can be detected through the appropriation of legality, and through it, of legitimacy, by certain sectors of the dominated classes.
Following the evolution of the history of filiation in the province of Jujuy, with the theoretical and methodological connections proposed in this paper, may provide new data for analyzing the persistence and cultural changes of this social, cultural, and legal category in Jujuy society.</text>

<text>The definition of the term “culture” involves complications and multiple dimensions that prevent it from being grasped once and for all. Faced with this problem of determining a basic concept, there is nothing more appropriate than tracing, throughout history, the different sources of meaning in order to understand and clarify the plurality of its present echoes, while also evaluating their fertility and heuristic validity.
This diachronic semantics shows that, in modern times, two antinomic meanings took shape and have coexisted since then. These may be categorized as follows:
1. An ethical or normative conception of culture, heir to the Enlightenment concept of progress and related to an absolute definition of values.2. An anthropological or empirical conception of culture, heir to the Romantic movement and linked to a relativist definition of values.
Each of these conceptions delimits two different ways of approaching cultural studies. However, the limits of both positions lie in the fact that they capture only the reification of cultural manifestations, but not the human activity, the practice, that produces them.
Cultural studies must overcome both perspectives by returning to the classical conceptualization of culture not as an object, but as a process. Recovering the concept of the cultural in these terms makes it possible to grasp the complexity of the field of study, which brings together objectifications and subjectivities, universality and particularity, values and facts.</text>

<text>“The popular” does not have a univocal definition, since it represents a complex reality and admits approaches from different angles. The possible ways of understanding the relationship between the popular and the economy are diverse. In this paper, I am interested in recovering the use, in certain currents of Latin American thought, of the concept of the urban informal sector (UIS) as popular economy.
I analyze this theoretical perspective and the political actions derived from it, as formulated by different authors. I present a state of the question concerning the formation and use of the category of popular economy in current Latin American thought. Four representatives are analyzed: Javier Iguíñiz, from Peru; Fernando Villarán, from Peru; Diego Palma, from Chile; and José Coraggio, from Argentina.
Although the perspective I propose focuses on part of the production in and about contemporary Latin America, the issue is not new. For example, much of eighteenth-century social history can be read as a succession of confrontations between an innovative market economy and the customary moral economy of the plebeians. In these confrontations, later class formations and class consciousness can be seen as prefigured.
Plebeian culture belongs to the people: it is a defense against the intrusions of the gentry or the clergy, and it consolidates the customs that serve the interests of the people’s own moral economy. The taverns are theirs, the fairs are theirs, and they have their own means of self-regulation.</text>

<text>The objective of this paper is to discuss the processes of integration between learned knowledge and popular knowledge. The analysis begins with an empirical example that reveals the apparent antagonism between “traditional medicine” and “academic medicine”.
In the province of Jujuy, a folk culture still persists in which popular medicine is considered one of the purest expressions of the cultural milieu. As a result, the population seeks alternative ways of addressing health care needs: inhabitants may consult either a “physician” or a “healer”, depending on how they perceive the signs and symptoms of illness.
The resulting syncretism has produced a mixed model of medical services. However, this popular knowledge is regarded by the academic medical system as strange, magical, mythical, and even exotic. For learned medicine, such knowledge would constitute a kind of “illegitimate practice”, and it is within this illegitimacy that the popular is framed.
In a broader sense, the hegemonic model prioritizes the biological dimension, but does not eliminate the social dimension; rather, it subordinates and restructures it according to its own theoretical and operational priorities, reducing it to one factor among others. In this way, a dichotomous and oppositional view between both medical systems prevails: the scientific and official is opposed to the traditional or illegitimate.
This has allowed the expansion of hegemonic medical practices over communities to lead to the transformation, displacement, and, in some cases, even the elimination of this popular knowledge.</text>

<text>Working conditions and environment vary significantly according to the area or sector under analysis. However, there is a constant that may be considered as a framework: in every organization there are dependent variables, namely working conditions and environment, within which a dynamic, individual process of permanent change takes place.
The objective of this paper is to analyze working conditions and environment, taking J. Neffa’s theoretical framework as a reference, in the context of a state-owned company undergoing reconversion. The analysis is based on the perception of the changes that the cultural, social, political, economic, and technological environment has produced in state organizations. These constant worldwide changes, together with the strong instability of markets, have imposed on organizations a process of adaptation to new demands. This has made it necessary to consider the important role of the human factor in companies. From this perspective, the analysis of working conditions and environment has shifted its focus from objective factors to subjective ones. Among the latter, the life and health of workers and their ways of reacting to different working conditions and environments acquire particular importance.
The research group set out to analyze, from the standpoint of individual subjectivity, how working conditions and environment are perceived and how they affect areas such as productivity, absenteeism, turnover, and quality of working life. The research involved contact with national reality and, particularly, with that of the province of Santiago del Estero. Attention was focused on workers’ health from the new socioeconomic perspective currently prevailing in Argentina.
On the basis of the reality observed, the study attempted to define the dominant conception in this state-owned company: traditional or renewed. Both conceptions theoretically characterized the central axis of our research. The traditional tendency addresses the problem of occupational safety and hygiene and acts upon the emerging issue without taking into account its causality and multiple determination. The renewed conception emphasizes the meaning that work has for a person, as both a right and a social obligation. Aspects such as the reproduction of the human species, scientific and technological progress, and the improvement of general living conditions depend on it.
Working conditions and environment were considered as a whole from the renewed perspective, as a result of the insertion of the world of work into a broader context. This required a global and integrative approach.
The study concluded that, in our country, although research has demonstrated the positive effects of improving working conditions, and despite the efforts of the International Labour Organization to achieve the humanization of work, the profound crisis has prevented employers from investing in improvements to working conditions and environment. The traditional conception remains deeply rooted, while progress toward a renewed conception of working conditions and environment remains a social debt.</text>
