The lack of systematized information about local contexts that politicians could make use of and the need to include quantitative information in our usual qualitative research demanded that we get into the field with another methodological approach. We designed a pliant questionnaire; it allowed us to integrate people's considerations. The informal interview will be the context where the data about considered reality will be built up. We found different ways of access to urban space, a significant presence of auto-construction, peasant migrants, and pauperized social groups, and a high proportion of subemployment and its unavoidable effects; they express the generalized vulnerability as a result of nowadays economic policies.</text>

<text>The existing contradiction in Argentina, among the democratization process of the political regime and the state reform process, politically excluding, presents us with an increasingly fragmented political and social field. Growth makes conflicts and demands more complex, especially in those cities in the interior of the country that continue to concentrate population in the absence of development in accordance with the needs that the accelerated pace of urbanization imposes. The common residence and the lack of infrastructure produce new forms of association oriented toward demanding collective solutions. Beyond cultural, political, and ideological differences; the diverse economic possibilities; and the fragmentation of the local social field, the residents of the “barrios” tend to organize around the present common problems. In recent years, we found that the organization and struggle of the poor have been limited to recovery for better urban services. We suggest that these movements, which do not find forms of direct expression within the political system, sustain a set of partial issues that are manifested in the constitution of a specific political culture in the conjuncture.</text>

<text>The changes that have occurred over the last decades in spaces and population of several countries, show major transformations related to productive forces and organization. Probably one of the most dramatic changes is represented by manpower demand reduction from certain activities like the sugar agroindustry of Salta and Jujuy, among others. So, the main questions that arise are the following: What happens to the population that is displaced from its activity and productive function? What happens specifically with the exceeding labor force when the socioeconomic system denies it the possibility of economic reproduction?
The current analysis was carried out on the basis of the population of Santa Victoria Oeste, a department located in the north of Salta Province. This area has functioned providing temporary labor force for the sugar agroindustry of Salta and Jujuy since the early decades of this century. Sugar industry, since the 70’s has reduced considerably the incorporation of temporary workers, pushing them to look for new labor alternatives. This search, in several cases, involves new migratory processes towards spaces not only rural but also urban, and different situations that goes from temporary proletarianization, the occasional wage-earning or the self-employment, often in spaces located very far from their original habitat.</text>

<text>This paper focuses on the way in which some social actors involved in the production of red pepper for paprika in the locality of Santa María, Catamarca, made sense of a conflict in the chain of production through their own presuppositions and forms of knowledge. The aim is to analyze their explanations through the identification of their presuppositions, their definition of the problem and its causes, and the possible solutions. The backing of this study is a corpus of semi-structured interviews conducted in the locality between 1992 and 1993.
The diagnoses and prognoses of the crisis made by these actors are compared, relating them to their underlying paradigmatic presuppositions. The significant differences identified do not arise from the type of knowledge involved: scientific or common sense. On the contrary, they are related to the incidence of both kinds of knowledge of different paradigmatic presuppositions about the relationship between theory and practice, knowledge and power. The definitions of the crisis are analyzed, then, considering the presuppositions about what to know, what to know for, and who to know for that characterize three different paradigms: the positivist, the interpretative, and the critical.
It is argued that productivist and positivist presuppositions underlie the rural extension practices in the area. This factor constrains the possibilities of the small producers because their social situation of socio-structural inequality is not taken into consideration and, if it is, it is minimized from a reductionist point of view that stereotypes them as self-minded, stubborn, and traditional.</text>

The conceptions analyzed are expressed through drawings and graphics produced by young people of the city of Humahuaca, as well as through the relations established between the annual cycle, climate, production, and the ritual. From a hermeneutic perspective, the following aspects are highlighted: the dynamic conception of space, the importance of time-space shared with others through oral and group communication, and the complexity present in these worldviews, which require, for their interpretation, consideration of the permanent interrelation between various levels of reality.</text>

<text>This article analyzes some of the conflicts that arose in the governorship of Río Negro, between 1880 and 1930, due to the labor of state agents shielded behind moralizing campaigns. The newly born territorial state tried to eradicate the daily “relaxed” habits of the inhabitants in order to impose a new model of family in keeping with the aim of transforming the “frontier” society into a “progress” society, socially and sectorally differentiated. Thus, men and women of “humble” condition—as mentioned in the documents—endured and resisted the intrusion of Justices of Peace, the police, the formal judiciary, the governor, and the Church into their everyday patterns of life. Within this context, a privileged place was given to the disciplining of the three great “vices” that, for those in power, characterized the everyday world of women: sexual freedom, economic autonomy, and autonomy in decision-making.</text>

<text>Discursive resistance among marginalized groups in colonial society reveals a practice that Martin Lienhard (1992) has called «alternative literatures». In several texts from the 17th and 18th centuries we find how women’s voices occupy extensive segments of the hegemonic discourse. The different strategies displayed in women’s writing during the colonial period in northwestern Argentina are the first steps in the process of constructing a new women's discourse and also define the process of deconstruction of the patriarchal system in the west for the next centuries.</text>

José Togo, affiliated with the Council for Technical and Scientific Research (CICYT) of the National University of Santiago del Estero (UNSE).
A study carried out from a qualitative perspective, resorting to the technique of “oral history” with in-depth and semi-structured interviews, these data are analyzed in three dimensions: 1. the construction (interpretation) of their identity, 2. their relationship with the local community and, 3. their relationship with the economic system.
The learning of the weaver's activity is characterized as part of the social process that implies meetings among mothers, daughters and relatives in order to spin, dye and weave and where knowledge is transmitted related to the techniques and procedures needed to attain a certain kind of weft and pattern in the blankets which gives each of them a particular and unique feature.
If the migratory trend of the weavers' daughters continues, it may stop the “transmission” of knowledge as well as the craft. In the same way the impossibility of placing the production on the market would lead them to look for new methods of alternative income and thus lacking cultural, social and economic encouragement this craft would become extinct in the short run.</text>

In this paper we want to analyze the composition of the group of land buyers by making an occupational characterization of them in order to later take into account the use of rural property, with the aim of addressing the complex matter of the function of land within the economic strategies of the individuals analyzed. For this purpose, we will consider and combine the following variables: buyers, occupations, investments made in land purchases and investments in land improvements, and level of rotation of rural property.
The sources consulted for this work are notarial protocols, sales tax registers, and wills, besides registers prepared from trade guides.</text>

<text>For approximately four decades, in a village near Cochabamba, Bolivia, people have celebrated the “Festivity of the Virgin of Urkupiña” on August 15 (in the Catholic calendar the day of the Assumption) This religious ritual brings together thousands of people who come to Urkupiña from most of the departments of the country to ask the Virgin for money loans; these loans are returned to the Virgin with interest during three consecutive years. In 1982 a group of Bolivian nationals, who were living in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Córdoba, started celebrating the Festivity of the Virgin of Urkupiña. Since then, the celebration has taken place on August 15 or around that date, with greater attendance and participation by devotees; this event also takes place in other neighborhoods of Córdoba.
These inhabitants of Córdoba are perceived by their Argentine neighbors as “Bolivian migrants”. Nonetheless, from the perspective of these inhabitants, migration is defined as “coming and going to work”. This paper shows the recreation that these inhabitants have made, in this social space, of their condition as Bolivian "migrants" to the city of Córdoba and how this same condition has modified the meaning of the festivity. In the process of transnationalization, the Virgin has kept her “lender” and “capitalist” character but has incorporated a new “good” into the list of exchanges: “work”.</text>

<text>Although the Spanish conquest of the American continent marked a turning point in the history of the social organization of the indigenous communities, not all the transformations necessarily adopted the direction imposed by the Spanish authorities.
This article offers an example of the latter by analyzing the intra and inter-ethnic conflicts over land ownership that took place in the sixteenth century between the Cuauhtinchans and the Tepeacans. The confrontation was conducted in legal terms within the framework of the Castilian legislation. Yet the conflict was not based solely on ancient claims to land ownership. The Spanish tribute system, along with the new territorial order created for the purposes of tax collection, was also at stake when the Cuauhtinchans and the Tepeacans confronted each other.</text>

<text>In this paper we analyze the changes undergone by the composition of the elite in Salta from the last decades of the eighteenth century in relation to the new position the city occupied within the Andean-meridional region. The incorporation of merchants into the society of Salta affected the Cabildo as a reference point of local political power, since access to the council offices allowed them to enter a sort of “career” towards the top of society, where social status, wealth, and political, military, and clerical posts were combined.
Even though the merchants had nearly monopolized the composition of the Cabildo in the last years of the colonial period, they could not completely displace the members of the landowner families that had already put down roots in the elite. Rather, they were frequently incorporated into those families by means of advantageous marriages. These traditional families, however, also deployed certain strategies to keep control over some of the matters under the Cabildo's authority.
The political life in the city council was far from being quiet and peaceful due to the conflicting interests that emerged when the Intendencia was established. From then on, the alliances between some residents and the royal authorities became more complex in opposition to other groups that struggled steadily to defend the preeminence the Cabildo had had before the Bourbon reforms, designed to reinforce the metropolitan power and the power of the authorities in charge of putting into practice policies, especially fiscal ones, in the colonies.</text>
