<text>This article is framed within the premises of oral history. Following the methodological problems and guidelines established by this perspective, it proposes an approach to the narratives of railway workers concerning the various historical processes linked to their company and to their participation in it. The objective is to determine the characteristics of the particular ways in which these workers remember and narrate their experience within the specific context of the province of Jujuy, with special emphasis on the weight of Peronism in their memories.
Their memories are examined in relation to the nationalization of the railways and the establishment of strategies strongly oriented toward workers’ welfare; the transformation of the relationship between the State, the labor force, and capital during the subsequent military dictatorships; and the privatization of railway services.
These policies left a strong imprint on railway workers as a whole. The experiences of prosperity during the years of first Peronism, the military governments that followed, and the removal of the railways from state control remained “engraved” in their memory in particular ways, on the basis of their specific historical experience as railway workers.</text>

<text>This paper analyzes the new role of women in the world of work in Palpalá, Jujuy, after the privatization, in 1992, of the military manufacturing establishment Altos Hornos Zapla. From the definition of a new socio-labor framework, new conditions of existence were created in the city. This paper defines a new social profile of women-led economic entrepreneurship in a context of crisis.
From an interpretive approach, the behavior of a group of economic actors is described within a situational framework. The study combines case analysis from an ethnographic point of view with a sociologically oriented perspective. An analytical framework is designed on the basis of the data collected through the presentation of 12 cases.
Among the main conclusions, the study highlights the importance of the sociocultural environment in the formation of entrepreneurial attitudes, which appear in all cases from childhood. Professional academic training does not necessarily imply the possession of entrepreneurial capacities; indeed, it may even become an obstacle. Practical experience and personal attitudes—such as the ability to adapt to change, persistence, and the capacity to read the context—are more important for developing these capacities.
Training in microenterprise management and credit support promoted by the municipality have generated concrete impacts on the development of business units. The study also highlights the absence of changes in mentalities and discourses concerning responsibilities shared by both sexes and women’s rights in relation to free time.</text>

Following the aforementioned lines of research, this article seeks to determine, on the basis of official sources—such as minutes of the DGFM board of directors and technical reports produced by the company—magazines published by social and cultural associations, and various issues of the commercial press, the main characteristics of the historical development of AHZ. It focuses attention on its qualitative and quantitative productive capacities and on the impact that its privatization generated on local employment.
The results obtained are linked to two specific periods in the development of AHZ. The first stage, from its beginnings until the 1980s, involved the consolidation of an integrated steel-production model and, at the same time, the implementation of a productive model based on an expansionary and integration-oriented policy.
During a second stage, beginning in the mid-1980s, the expansionary trend receded and, subsequently, in the 1990s, AHZ was privatized. The removal of AHZ from state control modified both its productive system and its impact on local employment and on the provincial economy.</text>

<text>In this paper, we propose to establish exploratory lines for inquiring into the way in which “new information and communication technologies” (ICTs), specifically those related to the use of the Internet, influence the installation of new “ritualized” practices surrounding the event of death.
The starting point is the observation of the emergence of “profiles” on social networks, particularly Facebook, used to express grief over the death of a person or different expressions of affection and wishes for recovery in the face of an imminent tragic outcome, such as terminal illness or coma. These expressions are made by friends, relatives, or even strangers who feel the need to express their feelings in response to such events.
Much of the current reflection on funerary rituals has led to the idea of the gradual loss of certain practices, such as attending wakes or burials and visiting cemeteries. This would be related to the place that the event of death currently occupies in our society, where it has become increasingly invisibilized through the loss of certain rituals, unlike other periods in which “mourning” was seen as essential for the elaboration of grief.
However, the appearance of the memorial profiles to which we have referred would seem to contradict this idea, at least in some sectors of society.
Some of the questions that guide us are: Do these profiles constitute a new way of remembering the dead? What do they preserve from previous modalities, and in what ways do they change? Do they seek the individual expression of grief, or do they aim to make suffering visible and share it with others?
The methodological proposal consists in analyzing the meaning of the farewell ritual to the dead on Facebook, applying semiotic methodology to a set of “texts” such as Facebook memorial profiles and interviews with users, as well as obituaries in print media. The aim is to establish the different enunciative modalities present in each case and the ways in which they account for social perceptions and modes of saying farewell to the dead.</text>

              <elementText elementTextId="9297">

Here, we apply the theory of aesthetic reception developed by Jauss and Gadamer, and propose that an architectural style was read in a particular way by the designer, the builder, and the person who commissioned the work.
Following Bourdieu: “... The differences associated with different positions, that is, goods, practices, and above all manners, function in each society in the manner of the constitutive differences of symbolic systems.” In this paper, we analyze examples of funerary structures from the foundational sector of La Plata cemetery, belonging to the Neo-Gothic architectural style.
We conclude that the possession of a mortuary vault in an urban cemetery, its size, and the “manner” of using the architectural style functioned as differentiating properties within the social field.</text>

Siguiendo a Bourdieu: «...

<text>This paper studies changes in Catholic funerary ceremonies and rituals by analyzing how they are performed and what transformations they present in current practice in relation to the recent past. The concept of change, from a semiotic perspective, is key to understanding these transformations, as is the concept of death—as an event—and its relationship with religion.
Active priests associated with the Roman Catholic Church in the cities of San Salvador de Jujuy and La Plata were interviewed in order to inquire into the possible changes that the Catholic Church perceives in funerary rituals and some of the causes it identifies. The interviews were recorded and later analyzed from the perspective of symbolic semiotics, making it possible to approach the Possible Semiotic Worlds of death and its transformations.
The research is guided by the following hypothesis: the modification of Catholic funerary rituals brings into play the sense of belonging and the strict meaning that Catholicism gives to death as a rite of passage, which religion perceives as a weakening of its structure, a weakening of faith, or a threat.
This work has made it possible to characterize the Catholic funerary ritual as a complex ritual, with different stages formally established by the rite of funerals: those linked to the farewell to the deceased and later stages, such as memorial masses. The changes identified, mainly in relation to the funerary ritual in its complexity, have to do with the suppression of some of these stages or stations prescribed by the Catholic religion: some have disappeared and others have been modified.
Although various factors are identified as giving rise to these changes, the common factor, according to the interviews, is cultural, linked to traditions different from the Catholic one and referring to particular geographic locations. It is in these situations that the Catholic Church develops a hybridization of funerary rituals, based on what this paper defines as adaptation, integration, and validation, mainly in Northwestern Argentina. The paper also addresses the issue of cremation, an aspect that appears as a major change that the Catholic Church has accepted in recent times, under certain conditions.</text>

<text>The image has functioned as a transmitter of ideas in societies without writing systems, and may be understood as a text whose reception process varies according to different communities. The arrival of Aguada religious ideology in the Hualfín Valley exemplifies these forms of reception. The objective was to determine the role played by the pre-existing local community that received the new icons and contributed others, which were resignified by the new ideology.
The icons present in the funerary units of the Middle Period in the Hualfín Valley, ca. AD 500–950, were analyzed, together with their variants, their distribution in burial contexts, and the changes produced from the end of the preceding Ciénaga culture onward.
The empirical basis led us to use the case study as a research methodology, as part of a microsocial approach. The funerary ceramic assemblage was taken as a key indicator. In its iconographic analysis, Gombrich’s approach (1983) was followed, while for its social implications, Bourdieu’s approach (1997) was used.
The analysis of funerary symbolic production made evident that a set of icons, originating in the system of thought and worldview sustained during the Early Period, was resignified in the following period.</text>

<text>This issue of Cuadernos FHyCS-UNJu brings together different approaches to death and funerary expressions, constituting a specialized space for dialogue among social science researchers. The contributions address death as a social field with its own logic, materially expressed through monuments, rituals, objects, iconography, and literary production. Part of the issue focuses on the pre-Hispanic world, where funerary practices and the consumption of goods make it possible to identify social differences as well as transformations in worldviews and iconographic systems. Other studies examine the changes resulting from the encounter between Indigenous and Catholic religious conceptions, together with contemporary transformations in funerary rituals. The issue also considers urban cemeteries that emerged with the institutionalization of the Argentine State and the social and ideological distinctions expressed in their funerary monuments. Finally, it addresses new ways of dealing with death associated with communication technologies and the Internet, which have given rise to virtual funerary spaces and new practices aimed at preserving memory as a social phenomenon.</text>

<text>The Aguada culture of northwestern Argentina (Middle Period, AD 600–950), contemporaneous with the Middle Horizon of the Central Andean Area, forms part of the cultural process that spread the religious ideology of the Tiwanaku interaction sphere across much of the Andean area. The consolidation of the beliefs, values, and behaviors that sustained it was expressed in the symbolic character of the iconographic repertoire incorporated into various objects and community spaces, such as funerary contexts and rock art.
The study of Middle Period burials in the Aguada Orilla Norte cemetery, in the Hualfín Valley, Catamarca, revealed recurrences that made it possible to affirm that the preparation of the burials responded to a deep, socially established symbolic content. Some of the recorded modalities must have corresponded to situations of social inequality, while others were related to the roles performed by individuals during life.
The human figures represented in Aguada iconography have been differentiated as deities or as figures with special functions in the cult, such as the sacrificer. A group of seven burials from this cemetery was interpreted as belonging to individuals who fulfilled this ceremonial role; in these burials, the individuals were interred with metal axes incorporated into the mortuary assemblage.
This paper analyzes the mortuary practices intended for the sacrificers, as well as the uses and restrictions of the icons incorporated into their funerary contexts in relation to the total repertoire used by the community buried in the cemetery. It highlights the symbolic value of the differential use of metal axes by one segment of the population.</text>

From the perspective that social practices related to death constitute events of social integration that are materially expressed in the qualities of tombs, grave goods, and the treatment of the body, this paper presents a first study of burial variability.
The type of tomb and its spatial distribution show homogeneity. The contents, however, present quantitative and qualitative differences in the social cost invested and point to the possible existence of special rituals.</text>

<text>From classical tragedy, which brings Antigone’s word as she seeks to bury Polynices, or Odysseus’s descent into Hades, to the medieval dances of death, with terrifying figures that show death’s harassment of human beings; from the journey proposed by Dante in the Divine Comedy to the metaphor of life as a river that resonates in Manrique’s Coplas; from representations of the transience of time in Renaissance and Baroque poetry to “the tomb that awaits with its funereal branches” in Darío’s poem; from absences and fragmentations, ellipses and ruptures of form, the abyss that follows the verse, or the blank space of the page that encloses the poem, death has always been alive in literary discourse.
The purpose of this paper is to delve into Marcelo Ahumada’s poem “Madrenaturaleza” (Catamarca, 1971), exploring its images of the end, associated with sleep, drugs, heartbreak, and meaninglessness, and connected with ancestral representations that are both recovered and lost in the present of a bewildered speaker.
Within the framework of the research project “Critical Analysis of the Notion of ‘End of the Millennium’ Implied in the Discourses of Art”, the aim of this paper is to correlate the notion of the end of history and of art with reflections on poetic discourse as a border, as well as with a revision of the concept of representation, in order to analyze how poetry aligns itself with death while at the same time freeing itself from it.</text>

<text>The University of the Street (UDELAC) was surely part of the thought of a period and of a large part of Argentine society, synthesized in the expression “m’hijo el dotor” (“my son, the doctor”). This expression guided the ideals of a broad sector of Argentine society during a period that may tentatively be located between the last two decades of the nineteenth century and the first seven decades of the twentieth century, and it was a fundamental ideological ingredient in the generation of a model of the country.
In its early stages, this mainly involved, especially in the so-called “Pampa Gringa”, the first or second generation of European immigrants, who saw in the public and free university the instrument through which their children would not have to suffer the poverty they themselves had endured. The most attractive option observable in the social landscape of economically successful people at the time was represented by the “doctors”, especially lawyers and physicians. The possibility emerged that, without the support of a family fortune, one could rise socially and achieve the long-desired economic well-being.
This sense, within UDELAC, of the need for social advancement through university studies in the liberal professions persisted—and still persists—longer in rural areas and in the poorest areas of the country, with more asymmetrical social structures, characterized by a greater proportion of population of Creole origin.
Little by little, the mechanisms and strategies of the University of the Street, which had originally been defined and understood as an unquestionable counterposition to the formal university institution, began to take over many aspects that belong to the essence of the university system.
This text is written by appealing to certain resources of both systems of thought and action, with the purpose of addressing the aim of achieving an adequate integration that remains faithful to the forms of the university in the present.</text>

<text>This paper aims to provide an outline of the Possible Semiotic Worlds of the Tupac Amaru Neighborhood Association among external actors. This will make it possible to establish a context of meaning and interpretation of the organization, which may later be contrasted and complemented with the presence of certain forms of the “University of the Street” found in the selected organization, thus advancing in the development of this scenario.
Interviews were conducted with people who are not directly part of the organization—external actors—men and women aged 18 and over.
The responses were analyzed from the perspective of symbolic semiotics, applying the following semiotic operations: normalization, segmentation, the formation of contextual definitions, the development of axes, and the formation of contrasting networks. It is considered that, through social discourses, a given community represents and interprets the phenomena of its environment. Discourse is understood as any event that constructs that of which it speaks: it is a limited set of statements that depends on the same discursive formation and appears under a set of conditions of existence (Foucault, 1970).
The aim of this research is to obtain information about how the organization is perceived by people in general. This first stage is the one presented in this paper.
The results obtained will later serve to inquire within the organization into its objectives and into what its members think. The contrast between external and internal Possible Semiotic Worlds will make it possible to obtain relevant data for the research on how Jujuy society interprets the organization under study, and how the organization interprets itself.
The research carried out in the organization so far has made it possible to identify internal teaching-learning aspects, such as the existence of a career path within the Construction Cooperatives, where learning takes place mainly through imitation (Conte and Paolucci, 2001), and the transmission of values linked to education, social reintegration, and work.</text>

<text>The purpose of this paper is to account for the discourses around which the category of art was constructed, and to characterize, from different approaches, the current state of the question regarding this topic.
It also seeks to find clues that may account for certain concepts produced by European cultural imposition, and to objectify the lack of theoretical updating in the field of art. This lack is evident in the absence of critical approaches capable of revising the discriminatory use of hundreds of terms coined by the Enlightenment, which to this day have not been resignified in light of epistemological ruptures produced by different theoretical, anthropological, sociological, linguistic, semiotic, and aesthetic approaches, among others, within a Latin American context.
The paper also aims to make evident the absence of artistic education from an early age, which legitimizes these signs of distinction by granting only “some” people access to “read” artistic codes; that is, to decode “Art”.
It is the codes of Popular Art that circulate in the street. For this reason, I approach the concept of Folklore as a non-institutional social discourse from a semiotic framework, in order to account for the visibility-invisibility of certain popular artistic practices that are not considered “Art” and that have a particular aesthetic production, neither lesser nor greater than any other.</text>
