THE RADIO AS A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE AMONG LISTENERS IN JUJUY (1940 – 1955)

This article starts from the hypothesis that the radio constitutes a cultural product that – during the years 1940 and 1955 –shaped the perception which the audiences built from it, translated into “radio memories”, and that it also took part in the formation of the national identity of the listeners in Jujuy of those times.Such statement is founded, firstly, by the conception of media that recognizes them as true institutions which consist of several dimensions: political, economic, historical, social and cultural. Second, identity is defined as a social and historical construction constantly revised by the relationship with other/s; it is the result of negotiations and interchanges of meanings, which provide sense to practice. In the third place, it is acknowledged that the mentors of the political project of nation approached it – aware of the technical possibilities which the radio could grant and its great potential in propaganda – as a channel capable of reaching the country with a nationalistic and integrating message. Finally, it’s worth mentioning that this work is supported by the memories of listeners who resided in the province of Jujuy during the period of 1940 – 1955. According to J. Martín-Barbero2 (p.200) , memory constitutes the matter of “what we are made of” and that it can be referred to as cultural.
