Significant Burials at the Aguada Orilla Norte Cemetery (Middle Period, Northwestern Argentina)
Entierros significativos del cementerio Aguada Orilla Norte (Período Medio, Noroeste Argentino)
Materia
Descripción
The Aguada culture of northwestern Argentina (Middle Period, AD 600–950), contemporaneous with the Middle Horizon of the Central Andean Area, forms part of the cultural process that spread the religious ideology of the Tiwanaku interaction sphere across much of the Andean area. The consolidation of the beliefs, values, and behaviors that sustained it was expressed in the symbolic character of the iconographic repertoire incorporated into various objects and community spaces, such as funerary contexts and rock art.
The study of Middle Period burials in the Aguada Orilla Norte cemetery, in the Hualfín Valley, Catamarca, revealed recurrences that made it possible to affirm that the preparation of the burials responded to a deep, socially established symbolic content. Some of the recorded modalities must have corresponded to situations of social inequality, while others were related to the roles performed by individuals during life.
The human figures represented in Aguada iconography have been differentiated as deities or as figures with special functions in the cult, such as the sacrificer. A group of seven burials from this cemetery was interpreted as belonging to individuals who fulfilled this ceremonial role; in these burials, the individuals were interred with metal axes incorporated into the mortuary assemblage.
This paper analyzes the mortuary practices intended for the sacrificers, as well as the uses and restrictions of the icons incorporated into their funerary contexts in relation to the total repertoire used by the community buried in the cemetery. It highlights the symbolic value of the differential use of metal axes by one segment of the population.
