The Storms of State Policies and the Resistant Language of “Casas Mochas” in the Puna of Catamarca

Housing spaces can actively or elusively express the values of a society at a given time, providing an image of the expectations and possibilities of a domestic group. In this sense, they represent a field in which battles of a material and symbolic order are fought, making it possible to understand aspects of both social relations and the conception of nature.
The genealogy of the category of rancho entails a long history of subalternization, having been functional to colonial, modernizing, and neoliberal policies, and serving as a gateway for state intrusions into rural spheres. This paper presents part of the results of an ethnoarchaeological study on vernacular architecture, which made it possible to identify the model characteristics of settlement systems in the District.
During the past century and so far in the present one, this model has been repeatedly challenged through the implementation of state policies under the stigmatizing definition of rancho architectures, without any analysis of the suitability of their designs or of the materials used in them.
Finally, from the exercise of a socially useful archaeology, the paper raises the ethical relevance of architectural intervention through the construction of the Reception and Interpretation Center of the Integral Museum of the Laguna Blanca Biosphere Reserve, affiliated with the National University of Catamarca.
