Women and marriage in San Miguel de Tucumán (from early colonization until of the 18th century)

The objective of this paper is to show the condition of Spanish women in San Miguel de Tucumán through the institution of marriage, from the foundation of San Miguel in Ibatín to the middle of the eighteenth century, when the first signs appear of women seeking and defending a space of their own.
Women's role is analyzed, considering the economic aspect, expressed in her dowry, as well as the ceremonial aspect through the different stages of the marriage pact.
The lack of women's autonomy is studied as well as their subjection to state protection.
The governors' policy determined women's situation by helping them with their dowries and arranging their marriages. This meant offering them protection, but it also implied a degree of manipulation.
Fathers and husbands had unlimited authority over their daughters and wives. Within this framework, women themselves looked for support and security from their male relatives, the state itself, and the church.
The study also considers women outside the marriage system, marriage annulments, and extramarital situations: cohabitation and adultery, as well as the state's efforts to put social structure in order, based on the protection of family ties.
