A Critical Approach to the “Tangible/Intangible” Dichotomy in Cultural Heritage from New Perspectives in Folklore Studies

Una aproximación crítica a la dicotomía tangible/intangible en el abordaje del patrimonio cultural desde las nuevas perspectivas del folklore

This paper compares current approaches to the issue of cultural heritage with those historically developed in the field of folklore studies. Based on the concept of “performance”, developed by the so-called New Perspectives in Folklore, the article suggests a possible way to overcome the tangible/intangible dichotomy that prevails in much of the literature on cultural heritage.
It also proposes a methodological tool for the recording, documentation, and analysis of cultural expressions that may potentially be subject to heritage-making processes.

Este trabajo presenta un paralelo entre los abordajes actuales de la problemática del patrimonio cultural y los históricamente desarrollados en el campo del Folklore. A partir de un concepto desarrollado por las denominadas Nuevas Perspectivas del Folklore —la noción de actuación (performance)—, se sugiere una posibilidad para superar la dicotomía tangible/intangible vigente en gran parte de la literatura sobre el patrimonio cultural. Asimismo, se postula una herramienta metodológica para el registro, documentación y análisis de expresiones culturales potencialmente patrimonializables.
