(On games and toys in the hospital. Recreational activities and childhoods with cancer in Buenos Aires from an ethnographic approach)
Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in childhood and adolescence worldwide. In Argentina, it is estimated that there are between 350-400 deaths of children under 15 years of age per year due to this disease. The aim of this work is to describe and analyze the connections between the childhood experience of going through the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and recreational activities. The article is mainly framed within the anthropological tradition of studies on play, but also draws from contributions from the anthropology of childhood and health anthropology to account for how these children with cancer play. For this purpose, ethnographic fieldwork was conducted in a public hospital in the Province of Buenos Aires in 2018. The category of institutional play was used as a research tool. It was concluded that these children incorporate into their games, elements such as blood draws, placement of IV lines, medications, hair loss, and other elements that are part of living with the disease and its biomedical treatment. Their play has a liminal character (the game “is” and at the same time “is not” what it appears to be) that combines with the liminal experience of cancer, where the “permeability” of the infant’s body is presented.
