Descripción

Along the Tawantinsuyu, the plazas or haucaypata were scenes where the Incas displayed their authority and glory. These spaces were witnesses of great events that brought together people from different regions. The public use of these plazas not only influenced demographic distribution in a differential manner, but access could also be restricted during certain specific activities. According to various chroniclers, the Inti Raymi or Festival of the Sun stood out as one of the most emblematic ceremonies of Tawantinsuyu, which was deployed in different contexts recreating a monumental spatiality. The present study aims to understand the spatial configuration and magnitude of attendance at a festive event such as the Inti Raymi at the Inca site El Shincal de Quimivil, located in Londres, Catamarca, in the Argentine Northwest. To achieve this objective, an exhaustive review of the ethnohistorical sources of the 16th and 17th centuries was carried out, complemented by the spatial analysis of the topographic data and the materiality of the site. Thus, the ceremony was contextualized in order to know the details of its realization and to identify two different spaces: one dedicated exclusively to the performative development of the show and the other for the spectators. The capacity was calculated for a 200-meter radius, resulting in up to 26,356 people being able to attend as spectators, a significant figure for an event of the magnificence of the Inti Raymi. Although there is a lack of specific ethnohistorical data for Northwest Argentina, this study represents a novel advance in understanding the complex social dynamics associated with ceremonies of this nature.
