Materia
Descripción
This paper examines the ways in which the experience of traveling along a road contributes to its representation. As a case study, I examine the 18th century Camino Real from Buenos Aires to Lima. The experience of a colonial inspector along this road influenced his memory, and through his memory, his writing. El Lazarillo de Ciegos Caminantes is used as a historic source through which to visualize the author’s experience of moving along the road. The document is analyzed using critical GIS techniques to find correspondences and disconnections between the text and the space of the road in which it was produced. The results of the analysis suggest that the experience of traveling profoundly influenced the way that landscape was remembered, and then, represented. In conclusion, I sustain that the disconnection between historical and geospatial sources of information sheds light on the “New Merchants” of the 18th century’s experience of the landscape, their interactions with other travelers, and the way in which the representations of the space of the road are linked with the travel experiences of the author who represented it.
