Descripción
During the second half of the twentieth century, in the province of Mendoza, it is possible to trace the origins of a technological shift that laid the foundations for several aspects of the wine industry’s restructuring around 1990. In this context, state efforts played a significant role in promoting technical innovations oriented toward a quality paradigm and the social construction of the wine’s “good taste.” The National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), through its Experimental Stations located in Mendoza, was a central actor in this process, particularly through the production and dissemination of research among wine producers.
This historical study identifies forms of knowledge developed between 1960 and 1990 at the Agricultural Experimental Stations in Mendoza and disseminated through the monthly journal IDIA (Informativo de Investigaciones Agrícolas). In particular, the analysis focuses on research concerning varietal selection and genetic improvement of vines, the incorporation of technical improvements in vineyards and harvesting practices, the adaptation of agricultural machinery, and improvements in phytosanitary systems, all aimed at enhancing the organoleptic characteristics of grapes and wine. These bodies of knowledge and “technological artifacts” contributed to synchronizing productive practices and technical criteria—serving as indicators of a redefinition of enological “quality” in Mendoza—within a historical context marked by efforts to position Mendoza’s wine within international markets. In this sense, the restructuring of the 1990s should not be understood as an abrupt and isolated process but rather as the visible outcome of a longer process of technological transformation and innovation originating in the 1960s, which ultimately made possible the production of exportable wines of high enological quality.
