Materia
Descripción
The purpose of this paper is to present different aspects related to lightning and its cult in the Puna of Jujuy, Argentina, drawing on documentary material from the early twentieth century as well as on contemporary ethnography. It seeks to reflect on the new conception of lightning that emerged during the colonial period, linking it to Santiago, or Saint James, as well as on the relationship between lightning and production through the analysis of the offerings dedicated to it.
Likewise, the paper examines the ways in which the Puna space is marked through different signs related to production and the sacred. It also presents the relationship between the cult of lightning and the name/surname Quipildor. The material presented and analyzed makes it possible to deepen our understanding of the conceptions and practices of the Puna of Jujuy concerning space, nature, and divinities.
