State Control and Regional Economies

Título
State Control and Regional Economies
Control estatal y economías regionales
Descripción
In this paper, we present an interpretation of the results obtained so far concerning the relationship between local societies and the Inka state in the Lerma Region, province of Salta, Argentina. We seek alternative explanatory approaches by incorporating the concepts of resistance and domination, as well as the search for equilibrium through negotiation.
We consider that the articulation between the state and local societies was related to a highly complex process of oppositional relations, accompanied by a restructuring of the social, economic, and political organization of the different ethnic groups. One of the objectives of the state, within the context of this bilateral relationship, was to obtain rotating labor prestations from the local population, depending on the degree of resistance encountered. Another objective must have been the implementation of strategies aimed at overcoming this resistance and achieving control over the situation.
The analysis of the archaeological context in the northern and southern sectors of the Lerma Region suggests that the state system may have implemented strategies intended to control rotating labor prestations and possibly to disrupt networks for the exchange of goods. These processes were related to the characteristics of social, political, and economic organization and to the different degrees of resistance presented by local groups.
