EXPEDICIONES, FOTOS Y ANTROPOLOGÍA. UNA LECTURA SEMIÓTICA

EXPEDITIONS, PHOTOGRAPHIES AND ANTHROPOLOGY. A SEMIOTIC LECTURE

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las imágenes que acompañan los textos publicados como resultado de la realización de la expedición sueca de 1901, dirigida por Erland Nordenskiold y Eric Von Rosen y la expedición francesa de 1903, a cargo de G. Créqui de Montfort y E. Senegal de La Granche. La lectura de las imágenes se plantea en dos niveles diferentes, uno, estrictamente semiótico, y otro etnográfico, en el contexto de las sociedades científicas de fines de siglo XIX y de la constitución del campo de la antropología como disciplina. Se hará énfasis en la forma de apropiación de los territorios, en el tipo de registro de los expedicionarios, en la violencia simbólica producida por la intervención de estos científicos en las comunidades y en la delimitación de un tipo específico de mirada del otro, analizando las miradas civilizadas y europeas sobre las miradas “bárbaras”.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the images that follow the texts edited as a result of the achievement of the Swedish expedition in 1901, conducted by Erland Nordenskiold and Eric Von Rosen and the French expedition, in 1903, in care of G. Créqui de Montfort and E. Senegal de la Granche. We can read these images at two different levels: one, a strictly semiotic level, and the other, an ethnographic level, in the frame of late 19th century scientific societies and the building of the anthropological field as a discipline. We will emphasize the means of territories´ apropiation, the travelers type of registration, the symbolic violence produced by these men of science at the communities and the bordering of “other´s “ particular way of looking, analyzing civilized and European ways of looking on “barbarian” ways.
