LA COMISION CIENTIFICA FRANCESA A MEXICO (1864-1867) Y EL INICIO DE LA ARQUEOLOGÍA EN AMERICA

THE FRENCH SCIENTIFIC COMMISSION TO MEXICO (1864-1867) AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE AMERICAS

El envío a México de una gran comisión formada por lo mejor de la ciencia francesa de su tiempo, y apoyada por buenos investigadores locales, permitió que por primera vez se juntara en un país de América Latina el apoyo oficial a la arqueología, la compilación de toda la información precedente, se hicieran extensos recorridos de campo, se excavara, crearan museos e instituciones y se establecieran métodos de trabajo.Esto logró, en el lugar y momento adecuado, que cristalizara un nuevo campo del conocimiento: el americanismo, y con él lo que hoy denominamos arqueología científica.

The dispatching to Mexico of an outstanding commission that gathered the very best of French science, supported by well-known local researchers, allowed for the first time to join efforts in a Latin American country for achieving official support for archaeology, the compilation of all preceding information, extended field surveys, excavations, the creation of museums and institutions and theestablishment of work methods. This yielded, at the right time and in the right place, the concretion of a new field of knowledge: Americanism, and with it, what is presently defined as scientific archaeology.
