INVESTIGACIONES ARQUEOLÓGICAS EN ANTUMPA (DEPTO. HUMAHUACA, JUJUY), UN PAISAJE AGRÍCOLA EN EL SECTOR NORTE DE LA QUEBRADA DE HUMAHUACA

ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AT ANTUMPA (HUMAHUACA DEPARTMENT, JUJUY), AN AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE IN THE NORTHERN SECTOR OF THE HUMAHUACA QUEBRADA

En el año 2005 iniciamos investigaciones arqueológicas en el sitio de Antumpa (Departamento Humahuaca, Jujuy). Este sitio deriva parte de su importancia del hecho de ser habitualmente considerado en la literatura arqueológica como uno de los escasos ejemplos de sitios pertenecientes al período Agroalfarero Temprano (o Formativo) en el ámbito de la Quebrada de Humahuaca, aunque las investigaciones arqueológicas en el mismo han sido escasas. En este trabajo se presentan algunos resultados de las investigaciones en curso. Se discute la distribución de la arquitectura arqueológica en el sitio, diferenciándose dos grandes sectores principales. Uno se ubica en la parte más baja del sitio compuesto por grandes extensiones regulares de conjuntos de cuadros de presumible función agrícola, con viviendas distribuidas entre las mismos. El otro ocupa una gran extensión del faldeo hacia el oeste y consiste sobre todo en cuadros de mayor tamaño, estructuras irregulares y largas líneas de despedre, sin presencia visible de estructuras de habitación.  Se presentan asimismo, las excavaciones desarrolladas en dos recintos circulares, uno de los cuales se ubica sobre un montículo de claro origen cultural. Los conjuntos artefactuales recuperados, así como dos fechados radiocarbónicos obtenidos, sitúan estas evidencias de ocupación claramente en el rango temporal correspondiente al Período Temprano. Finalmente, se propone la noción de «paisaje agrícola» como marco interpretativo más adecuado para abarcar y dar cuenta de la compleja ocupación y uso del sitio a través del tiempo.

In 2005 new archaeological investigations were initiated at the site of Antumpa (Humahuaca Department, Jujuy Province). This site’s importance derives in part from being one of the very few known sites, belonging to the Early Ceramic or Formative period in the Humahuaca region, even though actual research at the site has been scarce. Some of the results of the ongoing research are presented in this paper. The distribution of the archaeological architecture on the site is discussed, differentiating two main sectors. One of them is located on the lower part of the site and consists of large extensions of regularly built enclosures of presumed agricultural function, with circular houses interspersed among them. The other sector extends over higher ground on the ample slope to the west and contains larger and less regularly built enclosures as well as long stone accumulation resulting from fi eld clearing, with no apparent presence of habitational structures. Also discussed are the excavations carried out in two circular structures, one of them located on top of a mound of evident cultural origin. The artifact assemblages recovered, as well as two radiocarbon dates, situate these occupation remains well within the Early Ceramic period. Finally, the use of the notion of «agricultural landscape» is advanced as a more encompassing interpretive framework, to account for the site’s long and complex history of occupation.
