Architecture as a Determining Factor in Human Behavior

La arquitectura como factor determinante en la conducta humana

The aim of this research is to analyze Argentina’s housing problem during the years 1870–1909 and, consequently, its direct impact on the population from an economic, hygienic, social, and moral standpoint. From an architectural perspective, the typical models that constituted responses to the problem of the period were studied: a) the conventillo, or tenement house, and b) low-cost or workers’ housing. The advantages and disadvantages offered by each of these architectural types are analyzed here, since they constituted different factual proposals that resulted in different forms of human behavior.
The research was carried out following the scientific-analytical method, through a detailed study of: 1) the socio-emotional factors that influenced and determined the concepts of habitat and human environment; and 2) the political, economic, social, and historical facts that constituted the sociocultural framework of the period under analysis.
The evaluation of different statistical studies made it possible to understand the magnitude of the problem, as well as some of the most influential factors that gave rise to it. Moreover, an investigation was carried out into the different legal aspects that offered solutions to this housing problem, as well as their significance and/or acceptance by the population targeted by such legislation. This study led to a deep understanding of the way of life that a large part of the population—those in need of low-cost housing—had to endure in a habitat that constituted the only option available to them. Consequently, it was possible to determine the strong influence exerted by habitat on the behavior of its users. At the political level, the conclusion is that the measures proposed did not constitute a satisfactory or adequate solution for the social sector for which they were intended. This paper proposes a different view of the attitude to be adopted in analyzing the way of life in a conventillo. It is a proposal from a personal perspective, based on the reading and interpretation of primary sources, and constitutes an important contribution to the analysis of Argentina’s housing problem.

El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar la problemática habitacional argentina durante los años 1870-1909 y, consecuentemente, su incidencia directa sobre la población desde el punto de vista económico, higiénico, social y moral. Desde la perspectiva arquitectónica, se estudiaron los modelos típicos que constituyeron la respuesta al problema del momento: a) conventillo y b) vivienda económica u obrera. Se analizan aquí las ventajas y desventajas que cada uno de estos tipos arquitectónicos ofrecía, ya que constituyeron distintas propuestas fácticas que resultaron en diferentes conductas humanas.
La investigación fue llevada a cabo siguiendo el método científico-analítico, realizándose un minucioso estudio de: 1) los factores socio-emocionales que influyeron y determinaron el concepto de hábitat y ámbito humano y 2) los hechos políticos, económicos, sociales e históricos que constituyeron el marco de referencia sociocultural del período en análisis.
La evaluación de los diferentes estudios estadísticos permitió entender la magnitud del problema, así como también algunos de los factores de mayor influencia que dieron origen al mismo. Más aún, se llevó a cabo una investigación de los diferentes aspectos jurídicos que ofrecieron soluciones a esta problemática habitacional, así como su significación y/o aceptación por parte de la población destinataria de dicha legislación.
A partir del presente estudio se llegó a un conocimiento profundo del tipo de vida que debió llevar gran parte de la masa poblacional -necesitada de viviendas económicas- en un hábitat que constituía la única opción a la que podían acceder. Consecuentemente, se logró determinar la fuerte influencia que ejerce el hábitat sobre la conducta de sus usuarios. A nivel político, la conclusión es que los términos propuestos no constituyeron una solución satisfactoria ni adecuada para el sector social al cual estaban destinados.
Este trabajo propone una visión diferente respecto de la actitud a adoptar en el análisis del modo de vida de un conventillo. Es una propuesta desde una perspectiva personal, basada en la lectura e interpretación de fuentes primarias y constituye un aporte de importancia en el análisis de la problemática habitacional argentina.
